Hello,

I've noticed a little bit of an erratic rattle when my D4 7U is in neutral with the clutch engaged. Is this of any major concern? Everything still functions fine and there is no noise when the clutch is disengaged and also haven't noticed it when operating the tractor. I assume maybe the input bearing or some other main shaft bearing in the transmission has some wear?

Here's a video that you can hear the noise in;

probably the gears knocking against each other at low idle. just idle up some till it smooths out.

It does smooth out with higher RPMS. I've got to pull my newly installed winch back off soon to fix leaks that appeared so thought if there is something I need to dig in to that now would be a good time.

Thanks,

i don't think it is a problem but just to be safe you had better get some more opinions.

The pins on my D2's clutch are unevenly worn, so the thrust collar wobbles like a swash plate just a little. Yours might have the same deal. If so, new pins are readily available.

my 6U rumbles at low RPM and clears up perfect at around 500 RPM. most of my noise is coming from the winch gears i think. really big gears just idling on the end of a PTO that probably is transmitting some frequency from the engine. does this sound logical? anyone else with a winch experience this?

Mine was doing it before I put the winch on and I kind of thought adding it might help by adding some more rotating weight/drag to the main shaft but it didn't make any difference, maybe made it a little louder is all.

those are pretty big heavy shafts with straight cut gears. also when the engine is turning slow there is probably a bit of torque moments on the output shaft. i have had john deere and other tractors make similar noises at low idle when new.

Do you think a person should raise rev's to avoid having the noise? I would assume, though likely minor, it is causing added wear clanking around.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
