After using the 1957 cat d6 9u. It’s now experiencing an antifreeze leak. Is there something that antifreeze is supposed to pass or something worse? This is behind the injection pump
Maybe just loosen the radiator cap will get you by till pretty weather. I’ve done it before
Behind the injector pump? bigger picture might help. From the looks of that cap, have you checked the oil in the pump? - cts
Common place for the block to crack is right behind the injection pump, hope it’s just the head gasket leaking above it.
Sorry I meant to say behind the injection pump, not oil pump. I noticed a small trickle of antifreeze coming from behind the pump and wasn’t sure if the was a plate or if the injection pump had like a preheater or something (I doubt that anyway), but it’s looking like a crack from what someone posted I guess. There’s no antifreeze leaking from the head gasket. That last post was supposed to be a response but that apparently didn’t go through
How much is it leaking? How much are you going to be using the machine? Sometimes some of the old cures worked on small leaks, fine cracks. Alumna Seal, Dry mustard, were often used. Clean it up and see if you can get mirror and light on the block behind the pump, and do check the oil in the injector pump.
Hi, mikewood869.
Aha!!!!!!!! 'Houdini' antifreeze - escaping from where it shouldn't be able to.
I'd be doing some SEE-REE-YUSS cleaning and inspecting if it was mine - - - INCLUDING that oil plug on the injector pump which cts has been pestering you about.
Just my 0.02.
You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.
I had some pretty good success on a Model M AC years ago that had a cracked block, had been brazed and still leaked badly. Ran the tractor to get it warm, had previously wire brushed and cleaned the area. Did not drain the system! Mixed up some two part epoxy and applied, as the "bubble" appeared where it was trying to seep through the setting epoxy - I pushed on it with a nitrile gloved finger, sealed it. Was not pretty but it held. Might be something to think about. - cts
for leaks from the water jecket to the out side the old chemiweld can work. metalic seal up is another. nulon oil product make a very good head gasket and block sealer.https://www.nulon.com.au/products/cooling-system/stop-leaks/permanent-head-gasket-repair
works very well might be worth a shot.
"i reject your reality and substitute my own" - adam savage. i suspect my final words maybe "well shit, that didnt work"
instead of perfection some times we just have to accept practicality
Those internal additives work fine on very small seeps and leaks, anything that is large, they don't do much. Be cautious of how much you put in the cooling system, sometimes you compound the heating/cooling issues in an already taxed system. Key to the whole leak problem is identifying the problem, then making a sound decision on the remedy without compromising another component. - AS we all have experienced, Anti-freeze and hydraulic/transmission fluids are known culprits to find a weak spot and create a leak! - cts
