R6 Info

Howdy.  So far as I can tell they were a 4/5R D6 chassis.  The engine was the G4600, which was the gasoline version of the D4600. A few of these engines were put into early No 12 graders under the 6M prefix.  I am very intent on building an R6, I have the chassis and thought I had a grader with an engine, right up until I didn’t.  I’ve spent quite a bit of time studying the 6M grader parts book, comparing numbers between the gas and Diesel engines.  I believe this is a very doable project once a suitable engine is found.

Cool! Upon talking with my father. I found out that he has original paperwork for an R6. When he bought a Twenty two before I was even born for ten bucks, it came with a bunch of cat paperwork and amongst the pile was either a spec sheet or a parts book for one (also he said it’s not for sale lol). With that and the knowledge you gave me, hopefully finding what’s needed won’t be a large task. Good luck on yours!

That’s cool that he’s got some literature!   I’d love a scanned copy of it, if that’s possible.

Bruce, do you think a pseudo-G4600 could be approximated if an original can't be found. I'm guessing outside of the head, manifolds, carb, and mag (latter two are probably not hard to come by if off-brand), maybe only the pistons are different? I'd wager a diesel head could be adapted with a spacer plate and spark plugs buried way down : )

A guy could probably get one built.  The heads are altogether different, the accessory drive is different, the front cover is different because the governor lives in the front cover like a 4400, not in the fuel pump like it is in a D4600.  Of course the manifolds are totally different too.  It could be done I’m sure, just like anything, throw enough money at it and you can make it happen.

Ah, that's quite different isn't it.

Yeah, the basic block is the same but the details are all different.  I’m really lucky to have a parts book from the gas grader.  It’s been invaluable in tracking down the details. I’ve spent several hours comparing numbers between the gas and diesel graders, and then from the graders to the 4600 in the D6.  

If a parts book for a R6 were to surface, that would be the holy grail, as I still have some questions about the front cover area on the R6.  


If anyone has a line on a gas No 12, or just the engine, I’m all ears.
