Been years since I have posted on this site, back into the pleasure of owning old cats again.

Just picked up what I think is an R4 (serial # 6G1387W) and been replaced with a diesel serial #7U3626 (1948?). Could someone please tell me what year this dozer is. Dozer has sat for around 30 years according the previous owner (I kinda doubt that long) but did get it running and engine runs pretty good for it's situation. I have lot's and lot's of work to do to it in order for it to be used on the farm. The blade is in bad shape and they welded teeth on it which makes it even worse. Will have lots of cutting and welding to do on the blade. Best part is the undercarriage is not all that bad.

The pony motor front bearing and seal suddenly went bad - sitting too long I guess. It started growling and leaking oil. Might as well pull the motor and change the rear bearing as well. Other than that it runs great.

Plan on selling my D3C and replacing it with this one - I have quit doing dozer work for the public. Just need something for the farm. Also going to pick up a D4 7U track loader next week mainly a parts machine but could possibly be put back into service - tons of work needed on it for that to happen. Don't remember the serial number, will know next week.

Is the main clutch collar assembly the same on a R4 and a 7U? The R4 one is broken badly beyond repair. Also, are the steering clutches one in the same or different? Need to remove them and check if they are any good. The levers are hard to move (somewhat froze), right lever actually goes way too far forward for some reason? Need to get in there and see whats going on with them. I am hoping that I can take good parts off the track loader and use on this dozer if they are interchangeable.

I will try and load some pics. Thanks

Nice project there, R4 and 7U parts books say the main clutch cage is the same and you will find a lot of parts in the gearbox and back end interchange, like the cross shaft is the same, but the steering clutch packs are thicker in the 6U / 7U tractors. That blade sure is ugly isn't it.
Good luck
Mike

The final drive hubs and control levers don't jive with an R4, looks like all 7U tractor.

Good news on that, so I can hopefully use the 7U machine for parts. Blade is not just ugly but wore out more than what the pics show.
Thanks.

R4 appears to be 1941 and the 7U 1948

I thought the same thing when I picked it up. At that time I could not read the serial number tag on the final housing (just the engine) but when I got it home and cleaned the tag it had a 6G number. I will compare the hubs next week to the other 7U machine. For all I know this may have a hodgepodge of parts? The radiator has to be off a 7U also. The right steering lever is broke half off and so was the left one before they welded a pipe on it. These will get replaced with good ones.

I cannot find a year for that 6G serial number on this machine anywhere.

Thanks.

Hi, Folks.
Please 'kee-rekt' me if I am wrong but I think those track frame outer bearings and maybe the track frames as well could have come from anything 5T onwards and.the firewall/aircleaner installation appears to be 6U/7U. If there is a 6G serial number on the rear of the steering clutch case, could it be that the final drives, track frames, engine and some of the panelling were all grafted onto a 6G back end from one or more donor tractors?

A kew-ree-yuss mind would like to know.

why would you not keep the d3 , it will do more work faster than the d4 and a lot nicer to run??

Not the first of those hydraulic systems I have seen with a Brass Valve in the Hydraulic line! Are they bypassing it to another Control for some reason? Also It still has the Skids under the Blade! Those are as rare as hen's teeth! Every once in a while someone revives the discussion on replacing those! You wouldn't mind taking some pictures of them would you? Or at least of the one that you showed in the one photo!
