Hey guys, new to the form, just purchased a 99J series D6C and am trying to get everything up in shape before I use it much.

I changed out the oil on the transmission, steering clutch/brake and flywheel clutch today. I drained the 3 plugs at the back and the one under the flywheel. I cleaned the magnetic screen assembly, the flywheel sump screen and installed a new filter.

My question is does the flywheel housing refill from the transmission/steering/brake compartment. My book shows it takes 27 gallons for all these systems, which I added and after firing the dozer up the dipstick below the seat is showing full. I don't see any plugs or stick to check the flywheel clutch housing, am I missing something. I can't find anything specific to this in my books.

Thanks in advance, I'm sure this is the first of many questions.

Look in your parts book should be a gauge on right side of clutch housing for clutch.

Also shown in maintenance book.

Thanks for the reply back Bob, so there is a sight gauge or check port on the right side of flywheel bell housing? I'll look again, on my next trip to it, unfortunately it is about 1.5 hours away on a farm. I did look that area over pretty good yesterday, but may have missed it, I've been known to do that. Is that where you would add fluid as well? I'll also take another look in my maintenance book. Appreciate your input.

If i am thinking correctly the flywheel gets oil from a oil lube pump, and the excess gets pumped back to trans , so gets filled up that way

EZ, thanks I think your memory is correct, I looked in my maintenance book and the only check and fill points they reference are under the seat. I hate to do it, but just to be 100% certain, I may take the top cover off of the flywheel housing. That will give me the opportunity to adjust the clutch one notch, the snap in is just a bit light. I think my book was indicating it should snap in at about 50 pounds of pressure.

Just got this dozer, it was one used by a township, the good news is I have pulled every filter, screen and magnetic plug and everything looks great. The exception to this is the final drives, I checked them and they were full, but I think I will put some new oil in them as well, then everything will have been changed. I am thinking about going with a 75W-125 synthetic oil in these. I know there is a lot of debate on the oil to use in the finals and also think this may be the weak link so want to do it right. Most of the hours on this will be done in warmer weather, but could see some work around 40 degrees or so. Wondering what the best viscosity would be to go with, I know the book shows 50W, but the flow is so much better on these new synthetics.
