What can you tell me regarding the availablity of parts to rebuild a poney engine on a 9U D6. Ours is starting to get week, probably would need a complete overall. We are balancing that cost against converting the tractor to 24 volt direct electirc start. I would assume that the electirc start option is considerably less expensive, we would like to keep the tractor all orginal if possible. SN# 9U27566 1958 model if that information helps. A friend of mind who worked for Western States Cat told me 4 or 5 years ago we would be looking at $3,500 dollar range for the overall option, maybe a little more to have CAt do it.
Your advice would be appreciated. Thanks Much! 😊

Hi Woody,
As far as I know all the parts to rebuild the pony are still available from Cat.
Your serial number is high enough that either direct start or pony was an option and you would not have to deal with boring the starter hole.

What either one costs depends on how much you can do yourself. Starter prices are all over the map with new/used/rebuilt options. Last time I counted about $1200 took care of everything except labor on a direct start unit that did not require hole boring and did not include glow plugs.

Rebuilding pony motors has taken on a new challenge....finding someone that knows what they are doing and can do the work....including Cat. I'd get a quote before proceeding......I think you will be shocked😮

Thanks for the quick reply, I will give Western States a call. They had a guy in their Pocatello shop that did quite a few of these, I don't know if he is still there or not. The regional service field man retired a few years ago for this area and alot of experince went out the door with him. He is still in the area working part time for a construction outfit that has a lot of older Cat Scrapers. I mite pick his brain a little as well.
When you say shocked are talking $5,000 up or in that neighborhood??😮

If we wanted to include the glow plugs what all is involved in that??

Thanks for the input!!😊

I would think that would cover it.....even at a Cat store. Probably take longer to build the block off plate/battery box than the starter installation. Course Cat will charge premium for everything...no starter deals.

Glow plugs is a change out of pre-combustion chambers, add the glow plugs, wire with switch and solenoid. Pretty straight forward stuff.

Yours is probably oil clutch....change out won't be as clean as the original clutch cover for direct start. It doesn't have the casting accommodation for the pony pinion, has different floor plates and dash but still works fine for conversion.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
