i have a military generator powered by a Hercules 4 cyl diesel. It has a Delco 30MT starter on it, 24 volt CW rotation. Can or should this be used to convert an HT4 to direct start? I wandered through OM's files on conversion and there's no mention of 30MT. Thanks

I haven't tried using a 30MT but from what I can tell the same parts used to convert a 40, 42, 50MT starter with SAE #3 mounting pattern would also work on a 30MT but the motor itself is of lesser hp.

Do you have a reference for the starters? I mean the source for the dimensional measurements, I can't read the numbers in your pages on the site. I want to be sure
that the bendix is correct to match to the ring gear. Was there a model, circa 50's, that came with direct start and generator? If so I'd like to see a picture, to fabricate a bracket for the generator. On this genset there is a winterized package that features a diesel fired coolant warmer (electric element) and by size could fit the space left by pony removal, ever heard of something like that on a cat?

What dimensions are you looking for?
Yes, Cat had direct electric start in about 1955. It was an inertia type drive unit with separate solenoid and glow plug provisions. Requires the larger later type pre-combustion chambers. Either an 11 tooth or 12 tooth helical drive is required (11 tooth preferred). Generator was direct mount gear drive.
All manner of preheat devices, gas fired, diesel fired, and electric have been utilized.

I guess my biggest concern is the nose housing being correct and matching the pinion gear to the ring gear (count/pitch), the mount sae 3 looks to be correct. Further research led to seeing 30MT series were used for Deere 4020/24v tractors- designated medium duty by delco, so my concerns about service suitability are answered along with it already getting it done on a 4 cyl diesel.
I'm already sensitised to the this type of process, in the 60's I had a farm F250 that just ATE pinion gears, Ford tech came straight out and told me " yeah you're just going to have to mix and match till you find the right one, it's the ring gear, ford had a bunch of different ones for those years", i kept a couple bendix-spring/gear assemblies in the cab, only $3-4ea at the time just in case i finally got p*ssed off enough to up and scrap it so no one else would go through it.
I'ts going to be put the tractor in the shop and go with it

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
