Question: D4 7U Oil Cooler

The engine oil cooler on my D4 7U has started to leak.

Please advise if there is any reason I should NOT block the engine OIL COOLER inlet and outlet temporarily as I want to use the tractor a few more hours before removing and repairing? I do not have a manual showing engine oil flow, but the cooler is fed from the oil filter base.

I will remove and fix this winter but I am using the tractor now so I want to block the cooler unless there is a reason not to, ... temperature is now cool.

SECOND question, ... can a good radiator repair shop repair the oil cooler?? Not sure what metal is used in the cooler?

Best to fit a loop pipe. The fitting threads appear to be UNF as in a bolt thread.

..or plug the outlet/inlet with pipe plugs to suit and remove the bypass valve and spring located in the filter base accessed via the large nut.

There was a LONG thread on this subject about 3(?) years ago. Most photo's have probably been removed. These two fellows are correct in that there are two ways to repair this. As you are planning an attempt to repair later, I agree with the "Loop" method as being the easiest for you!

its steel and rusted thru, don't repair, u don't need it anyway.

Hi , just look at pic 3 on cat d8 , just above this thread and you see the solution . This was done on many engines and lasted for ever .

Get a couple of dash10 Oring Face Seal plugs from your local hydraulics store. Slip a #116 oring up to the shoulder, add your preferred thread sealer and forget about the oil cooler. Do remember to remove the oil cooler bypass plunger and spring from the bottom of the filter housing.

Appreciate the help, ... here is what I did today.

1.) Removed the two fittings that screw into the Oil Cooler, ... then I tapped the ID of each fitting to accept a 3/8" NPT internal hex plug and blocked each port.
2.) Flushed all of the old oil and crude out of the cooler ... "just because"...
3.) Reconnected the lines as they were.
4.) Removed the large nut at bottom of filter base and removed oil cooler by-pass plunger.

I thought I was good to go, ..... but now a friend has caused me concern.

SO I HAVE ONE LAST unnecessary question, ... please bear with me!!
A friend came over this PM and said he thought the large plug on the bottom of the filter base was the OIL FILTER by pass valve .... now I am nervous as I do not have a Service Manual.

Please confirm again that the big nut is in fact the Oil Cooler by pass.

Here is a picture I saved off of this site several years ago. I think Old Magnet may have posted it. I made one for one of my 7U's and it worked well. Just so you know, Cat discontinued using oil coolers on the later 7U's. I was told to loop the line so it bypasses and NOT plug them off.
