G'day,
I'm a newbie to the club and live in Australia. I have a 1939 RD6 and am looking at purchasing a 955K Track loader. Just wishing to know if the early (pre D model) D4 tracks will fit both these machines. I also have a problem with the RD6 intermittently completely locking up the left hand drive when reversing the machine. The machine must be driven forward a little to release it. Needless to say the Rd6 is out of action until repaired. Any insight into what this could be before disassembly would be appreciated. Could the dead axle be bent? I also have the main engine sump filled with diesel which I believe from reading other forums will be an o-ring seal between the injector pump and the drive gallery.

Great site!

Hi, Maddad64.
Welkum too ther 4um an' ther club. No. I don't think early D4 racks will fit either the RD6 or the 955K and I also think you are probably right about that leaking seal. When you get 'a round tuit', I'd suggest having at least one other person there to help with the lifting or some other from of assistance. Those pumps are not light.

Re the left side locking up when you reverse, have you gotten off the machine when it does this and checked the track to see if anything is jamming there, although I don't think this is likely to be the cause. Other than that, it lookslike there is going to be some major surgery in the future of your RD6. It sounds to me as if there may be a broken tooth in there somewhere catching on something. Or maybe a loose bolt.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Welcome to ACMOC Maddad, early D4 chains will fit the RD6 with extra links added provided the bottom and top rollers have been changed to the narrower D4 size, the 955 runs D6 size chain, my "good" RD6 had D4 chains on her when I dragged her home but she is now fitted with proper RD6 chains, sprocket pitch was the same.
Good luck
Mike

I am in the central Qld area. I've had the RD6 for over ten years now and doubt I'll ever part with it. I'm away from the machine on shift at the moment and will post the serial number when next looking at it, (There was once a time I knew it by heart). Thanks for all the advice and invites. I'm interested to know if any mods are needs to fit the D6U chains on the RD6 and what model, and any mods required for the D6 chains onto the 955k?

Hi, Maddad64.
I'm no expert but I thought the 'R' was dropped form the model designations in 1937. If you can post the serial # when next you visit the machine, some of the exremely learned gentlemen on here will be able to give you a year of manufacture and whether it is 'ackshully' an 'R'D6.

Just my 0.02.

Welcome to the Forum Mate . I am in Central QLD ,near Gladstone .Once you get your serial number i found this info .2H 3247 Was the Start of the D6 designation .So means anything lower than 3247 was an RD6 .
As for the machine locking up in reverse It could be a Bearing collapsed in the final drive .
We bought a Cat 22 , and it was driven on to the truck . When i got it home ,I tilted the tray and went to let it go down the tray with the winch rope ,.Only went a couple of feet ,and stopped rolling . Had to drag it off . .Found the pinion bearing had collapsed and the balls jammed things up .

Sounds like a final drive bearing failure to me, drain them down and see how much shrapnel comes out, the D4 chains will not fit the 955K, 955 changed to D6 chains with the 955E (12A) then to 6.91" (D5?)pitch with the 955H and then to heavy duty 8" pitch D6 late in the 955K range, or was it with the 955L. If you want more detail I will get my old CTS book out.

If your referring to the left side steering clutch locking up and not releasing until you change direction, the clutch plate teeth may have worn sufficiently into the drums to where they are hanging up.
