Hey guys, recently bought a 1939 D2 3J, 8000 hours on it, for $2000 CAD as my first project...after cleaning points on mag, fuel tank, and fuel lines she fired right up...previous owner said it had been sitting in the bush for 30 years... thought I would share a few pictures

Nice one JDP! You can get new seat cushions from John Hahn - they're excellent!
Cheers,
Neil

Great job. Thanks for the photos. It must have been covered well to keep the moisture out. Are the steering clutches and brakes working to? Wonder why it had counterweights on the drawbar with no blade. What are they made of?

Steering clutches and brakes are both free...right steering clutch was stuck but we put the crawler into 5th gear while holding back the right hand steer clutch and engaged the main clutch and she broke free...counter weights are made of steel, but don't appear to be original, as there is a nut welded onto the hitch with a stud going up off that nut and then bolted to the weights...

Hi JDP,
Nice 3J you have there. Just wondering if both the the serial number plate on the motor and at the back of the tractor match? The reason I ask this is that in the 3J parts book I have, it shows the early type Fuel Filter housing fuel pressure gauge mounted with a bracket on the upper left side of the housing like you have on yours. The problem is this type of set up was only used on 3J1 to 3J219 and from 3J6403 up to the last one made 3J8600. At least that is according to the Cat books I have. Perhaps the earlier owner(s) swapped out the original housing on yours and replaced it with the one presently on the machine or the motor was swapped out. Get it fixed up and enjoy. I have 3J4103(1940) with a seat tank and really like operating it. They are small, but can still do alot of work for their size. 👋

It is possible that they switched out the housing and or motor, the serial number plate on the engine has either fallen off or been taken off

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
