I had been passively watching for a Galion or an Adams grader when a friend called and said "I have this big iron thing and a old manure spreader at my horse farm. You can have them if you get them out of here."
So being one to not pass up free iron I went to check it out. The manure spreader was an old ground driven John Deere with a flat tire. Otherwise it was in pretty good shape, even still worked on the tow home after airing up the tire. I live in the desert southwest so rust isn't as big of an issue.
I came back and she took me to the back of the property and there sat a Caterpillar pull type grader. Surprisingly the control wheels all spun freely and seemed to work, but the front axle was missing. I plan to scour her property in hopes to find the front axle but chances are 50/50 or less since she has had scrap hauled off in the past.

I want to know what model this thing is so I can figure out exactly what the front part I am looking for looks like. Or if someone has a picture that would be great! I did a Google search and the only Caterpillar pull type graders I saw had steel wheels, and this one has rubber. Maybe they were converted?

Thanks
Dan

Looks like my photos didn't attach. Or maybe I am too new of a member to post photos, or maybe file is too big.

Edit: Files were too big.

Hi, Binderdan.
The small tag in your second photo is the key. That has the machine serial number which also indicates the model of the machine by the first digit and letter. It appears to me to read "4A735". Is this correct? If it is, somebody with more reference library that I have will come along to tell you what you have - and likely what to look for.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Thank you for the reply Deas Plant!

The small tag that says "Grader Number" has the number 4A737 on it. Maybe someone can decipher that for me.

I'd love to know what kind of horsepower this is designed to be pulled by. I have an IH TD-9 and a TD-14A. I assume my TD-9 should pull it just fine.
Sorry, I am an IH guy, so I am learning the CAT stuff as I go.

Thank you Skinner and chriscokid! Now I see pictures of what to look for. Hopefully I can find it and I won't have to build a front axle for it.

That is a pretty cool website! I will have to do some looking around on there at other stuff too.

If you cant find the front axle, I have seen these that were modified to just have a pimple ring on the front and pulled by a heavy tractor with a hitch on the draw bar. The county I worked at had a few set up that way, but they were smaller. Nice pull grader.

That is a nice grader!... I suggest that you make every effort to find the front dolly for that grader because making a one is no small task!

In a worst case scenario and I couldn't find the front dolly and had to make one how important is the leaning wheel feature? I don't have any experience using this type of grader so this will be a learning project too. I was thinking if I had to I'd build a long drawbar fixed to an axle with a sort of gooseneck ball on it. And build an adapter for the grader that could attach to the gooseneck ball. Or as oldbeek suggested make a pintle adapter. I know... Thats blasphemy... But better than letting the scrap man get it.

Of course I'd much rather find the proper dolly.
