Earlier this year a prototype D6N Tractor developed by Finning UK Limited was sent to Sweden for testing in artic conditions -40 degrees.

The 2 D6N's will be used to pull sledges containing accommodation and supplies for the 6 month expedition led by the 68 year old British explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

More photos of the prototype tractor are available on the Link Club Flickr photostream.

KoO - whats your professional opinion on the prototype tractor?

Interesting design with the grousers.
Don't know much about the rest.
Wonder if KoO will approve.

Hi, David Wills Cat 60.
I'm curious about the 'turban'. I thought you said this was an English expedition.

Thanks for sharing. And the best of luck to the expedition. Although Bruce Oz may have a point.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Deas Plant,

The red 'turban' is an inflatable tent to enclose the tractor for maintenance.

The odd looking grousers aid traction on ice, particularly on side slopes. When on an icy side hill, a machine with straight grousers will take off side ways like it is on skis. (Don't ask how I know)
I do wonder at what provisions they have to warm the engines for cold weather starting? Experience also tells me that they are not the best starting engines in cold weather. Any of the ones that I've been around would not start at much below -20 despite having 0-40 full synthetic oil unless they had some provisions to warm them up, as compared to the older D6H's with 3306's in them that would start at -40 with the aid of a little canned heat (starting fluid)
