Proper track adjustment saves money and helps to prevent excessive wear and tear on sprockets, tracks, rollers, chains, and idlers.
I now that many old dozers have worn down undercarriages and are many time for show and personal collections, and people jack them out tight so they do not come off, and they do not have to spend a lot of money to just keep them in there collection. They are not used to work or move dirt, etc.
But I have seen many peaces of Equipment working ( Dozers, Loaders, Excavators, etc. ) that have tracks jacked out to tight ( even if they are new ) and they will wear out quicker, and many times blow out track adjustment seals.
If tracks are to loose they will wear out faster because when you back up the pins will bunch up more, and try to ride on the top of sprocket teeth, and grind pins, and teeth faster.
Dirt in the tracks acts as a lubricant between pins and sprocket teeth, and if the tracks are to tight there will be very little lube benefit, and there will be excessive pressure put on track seals when backing up.
When moving forward there should be some sag showing on the top side of the tracks but it will not show sag when backing up.
There are track adjustment specs for tracks which the manufacture can tell you about.
We used to just eyeball the adjustment.
One of the best kinds of dirt to run in is damp dirt which actually helps to slow down the friction of metal against metal. The worst is sandy soils, creek beds, etc, which eats metal like a grinder.
Dry dust dirt and squealing tracks, get out the old money bag.
Another problem with tracks is top rollers not rolling because of ( lack of roller grease ) or there is mud or dry dirt packed around the top roller, usually on it's back side, ( cold weather is the worst ) and it does not take long to wear flat places on a roller, and once that is done it will stop rolling, which will wear down chain rails faster.
