I'm looking over the brakes on my d2 project, i'm trying to determine the proper function of the brake pedal (unit was non functional when acquired, and never driven) The external springs on the pedal are broken but i believe there are springs internally also on the brake linkage inside the final drive casing. What i'm trying to determine is if my brakes are functional, when i move the pedal (moves about 3 inches) i see the brake moving slightly through the brake adjustment port but the pedal does not return when i press on it, is it supposed to return by itself? keep in mind the external springs are broken and i'm not sure if those springs alone cause the brake pedal to return.

The external spring returns the brake pedal, there is a small spring also on the brake adjuster but that will not influence pedal return, get that big external spring on before you instal tin work is the best tip for today!. Also make sure you have the brake band positioning bolt coming up through the base of the steering clutch compartment too, tighten it all the way tight, then back it off 1.5 turns and lock in place with it's lock nut, it holds the brake band in proper alignment with the brake drum.

Mike,
I don't have a Manual handy, but on a "J" series, I don't remember an internal spring on the Brake Band?

Jeff, the internal spring on the adjusting rod that dpendzic referred to serves two purposes, it keeps the band tight up against the adjusting nut and also keeps the band spread away from the brake drum when not applied - without it the forward rotation of the brake drum when the machine is in reverse can sometimes cause the band to grab and tighten onto the drum giving you an unintended brake application. I learned that last piece of information when I first got my old 5J.

Hi Jeff, Looking at my 3J1-3J3500 Parts Number book 4B6493 is the "external" spring attached to the brake pedal and the other end attaches to the bell housing and the 4B4976 "Eye Bolt", the small "internal" spring on the brake band adjuster is 4B4654.

As soon as the first reply came up on the "spreader" spring. I suddenly remembered! Thanks for being patient as I was on a "internal pull back/rotate spring" thought and couldn't even picture the second spring in my mind>>>>>

At least you are trying to help, better to have tried and failed, than never tried at all!
