I recently aquired a 78A series D4D. It had been a year or more since it had been started. After unsuccessfully trying to start it, I discovered that the rack was stuck in the injector pump. I finally got it to move but it is still to tight to work properly. So I took the governer off and was going to pull the injector pumps so I could pull the rack. I ordered the special wrench from my Cat dealer to fit the injector pump retainer nuts, but it just slips, and they won't come loose. I was wondering if anybody on here has ever had this problem, and what I should try next. If I could get the rack to loosen up someway, I'd just leave the pumps alone. Anyway, I appreciate any ideas you guys and/or gals might have.

Take the pump off and mount in a press where you can place a light downward pressure on the splined wrench to assist in unscrewing the collars....that is if they are not completely buggered up.

Sent one to CAT fuel injection shop for an overhaul. The pump came back with all the old retainers in a bag. Lots of cold chisel marks in them๐Ÿ˜† Seems like some had some kind of nut welded in them, can't really remember.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time๐Ÿ˜„

I do appreciate the responses..............is there any way I might be able to free the rack up? I think it's stuck from setting around, if I could get it freed I wouldn't have to go any further.

Barry,

You might try my favorite "loose juice" on that. Half and half acetone (or Coleman fuel) and two stroke oil seems to work wonders on most stuff I've tried it on. The acetone or "white gas" as Coleman fuel used to be called is a super penetrant plus the two stroke oil is a good lube.

I also squirt it on the blades of my D4 and 12E grader after use. .keeps 'em from rusting a LOT longer than WD40. Yup, better'n any patent snake oil I've used plus it's a lot cheaper ๐Ÿ˜†

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
