Is there still parts available to rebuild a pony starting motor??

mine just quit and I took it to a local shop and they are not sure if they can get parts for it.. couple of numbers I have are 1107094 (from the motor itself) and 6F8024 (from my parts book).

thanks

I just refreshed mine from a HT4 D4-7U and parts came in the next day to the local Cat dealer. I did main and rod bearings and all the gaskets. The rings were also available but I didn't do them. Good luck!

What parts do you need? I'm reasonably sure all is available except maybe the armature. Even a bad shaft can be pressed in and out of the armature if need be. End plates with bearings are probably the hardest to get new but there are other adaptions. Field coils, brushes, springs, terminals etc. should not be a problem.....sort of depends on the shop.

Well, I don't know what it needs yet.

I went to start the pony on Saturday, it behaved as though the battery was low, turning slower than normal (i run a 12v battery and charge it as needed, because the generator does not work.), so i charged the battery for a bit, switched the charger to "boost" and all it did was "click".

I got the truck and booster cables and tried to connect to the starter side of the solenoid and got nothing.

I removed the starter yesterday and on the floor did the same thing, connected a battery to the starter (by-passing solenoid) and got nothing.

took it to a shop today and the first thing the ol' fella did was check his supplier web site for parts... didn't see anything...

he is going to open it up tomorrow and i suspect a call... i will print the page out of my parts manual and give it to him...

i am trying to see if the parts are available or if I should look for a used starter on the forum here.

I'd think you'd have better luck finding parts using the Delco Remy 1107094
number.

i have read here that many are running with a 12v battery and have had no problems.. so, i've been doing this also.. is it possible that I have fried the starter because of that??

the reason i did this is because my generator was not charging. bought a used generator, could not get it to charge either.. was using a 6v battery, but after 10-15 starts, it would need to be charged again... found it easier (and quicker) to use a 12v battery. seemed to last longer also.

i don't want too get this starter rebuild/replaced and fry it again in 1 year.

thanks

I have been running various pieces of equipment with 6-volt starters on 12v forever with no problem. So long as your not running it blistering hot from overcranking it's not a problem. If it makes you feel better you can have the field coils changed to 12v but the cranking speed will be slower making it tuffer to start a tired pony motor.

If it's not just worn out brushes the usual death rattle is the pot metal commutator end plate, especially the ones with no bearing wears out, the armature drops down and runs on the pole shoes and the whole thing is toast.

OM,

i did notice right away when I first started using the 12v battery that the pony spins over so much faster and starts much easier, so no overcranking needed..

it does not seem to have any play in it, with the exception of the starter gear having a bit.

I will be dropping by the starter shop later today to give him a print out of the starter break down and ask him to circle the parts he thinks i need and then i will try the cat dealer and then here.

thanks

Give it a go here before you give your money to Cat.....if they even have any of this old stuff. I have a pretty good idea of where to get various parts and also have the Delco part numbers.
