Hello,
Our D73T has both a pony and a electric starter. The electric is not hooked to any batteries yet but was wondering why have both?

I assumed the pony was to turn over and warm up a large piston diesel motor before starting it? The electric appears to just turn the diesel over for starting so it would require some pretty hefty batteries and bullet proof starter.

So why both? Which one should we use or do you use both depending on temperature? What battery configuration is best? pics below of set up.

What you don't know CAN hurt you. The starter in your pics is the electric starter for the starting engine. This is a 6 volt system and the battery is mounted beneath the floor plates of the operator's station.

Shut the gas off on the pony and idle it until it runs out of gas to shut it off after starting the main. The mag switch should only be used in emergencies. If not the crank will soon be out of your pony. The pony only holds a little over a quart of oil and soon becomes diluted with gas caused by the juggling needle valve in the pony carb. Standard paragraph in every operators manual for all pony start machines. I would be careful on use until I acquired manuals and took time to read them.

Good info but that pony actually holds 2-quarts oil.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
