What weight oil do you gentleman like to use in your pony motors? I have a D7E 48A. I have an original D7E 47A1-up operators manual and it calls for 10W in the pony engine crankcase in all temperature ranges except below -10F (then is has a note to "Dilute" the oil). This seems a tad light to me. I was considering going with Delo 15W-40 diesel engine oil. I have been told by a large fuel/oil distributor that Chevron is one of the few companies that do not sell recycled oils.

Yes 15w40 in my pony motors HOWEVER only if you are sure the engine is clean inside DEO will loosen years of sludge which then circulates causing rapid wear , change run a couple of times change again !!!

I guess you could , back in the day the theory was if it had a filter you used a detergent oil so dirt was carried to the filter if it didn't
then the non detergent oil allowed the dirt to settle out and not keep going round everything , these days most stuff does just fine with detergent oils regardless... however as above you can set a lot a crap in motion if you put a detergent oil in a sludged up motor ...

Been using 30w non detergent for years, was the original spec I think & is working fine. I change it frequently because it is so cheap for the insurance.

I use Delo in absolutely everything I own and have since the 50's. I have never lost an engine due to lubrication issues regardless of what jiffy lube says will happen.

There is an exception, when I lived in IA Delo was hard to find so I switched to Delvac for a few vehicles, then back to Delo.

Your choice of oil for the starting engine should depend on the condition of the engine, if the history of the engine is unknown or if it has excessive blow-by go with a heavier viscosity oil as your engine’s clearances are now greater than the brand-new engine that the Operation and Maintenance Instructions listed the oil specs for.
Your local climate should also be a factor. I suggest you change your profile to allow your town or your general location to show. This will help others to help you without having to ask your location.
Try to not over think the oil type or viscosity, the capacity of the starting engine is only 3 quarts so if the oil drained out is very dirty I would change it again as soon as the new oil looked dirty.
Changing the oil in any starting engine should be done like the old get out to vote motto stated from the “bad old days” in Chicago: “Do it early, and do it often!”

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
