Presuming you are talking about a classic D4 and not a newer one I submit the following.
Go to the search function and you will find many discussions about this in the archives. And just about as many opinions. Straight 30 was the recommended oil of the day. As always let the argument begin.
I got the popcorn maker going to watch this Thread! :deadhorse: 😛op2: HAHAHAHA!! 😛op2:
OK--lets get it started! :rolleyes2: i always use straight 30w diesel oil in the diesel engine as recommended by the operators manual---however i use straight 30w or 40w in the pony non diesel but detergent oil

Can I add some (diesel) fuel to the fire?...Synthetic vs non-synthetic?:argue:
All our diesel engines and old pickups, LP engines etc use Chevron Delo 400 15W40. Not likely to ever get below 20 degrees F here or over 100 F.
Note....we do not buy the LE formulation recommended for late model emission controlled diesel engines. The LE formulation cannot have high levels of zinc additive, but I am not sure the non LE still has it or not.
I expect most manufacturers have similar oils for the pre "tier" engines with flat tappet cams etc.
My apologies, I didn't realize this was such a debated topic! I figured this would be an easy one for you guys. Sounds like either straight 30 or 15-40 will be fine
