What oil would you recommend running in the pony and the main engines on a D4? I was thinking straight 30 in the pony and rotella 15-40 in the main. Is there any preference between detergent and non detergent? Do any of you run any zinc additives to your oil?

Presuming you are talking about a classic D4 and not a newer one I submit the following.
Go to the search function and you will find many discussions about this in the archives. And just about as many opinions. Straight 30 was the recommended oil of the day. As always let the argument begin.

To stir the diesel fire, I will fill the pony in LATE Fall with Synthetic in case the John Deere gets overwhelmed by the snow that occasionally becomes more than anticipated.
That way I can get the Pony to roll over mid winter, come EARLY Spring I change it back to DINO Oil 30W like it was designed for.

I'll Bite.....

my cats d65r, and d6 9u's get more use in the winter than in the Summer, due to snow removal, I run 0w40 in the diesel, and 0w30 in the pony, semi synthetic blends, they run just fine. yes the manual recommends straight 30 weight or 10 weight or 40 weight depending on your ambient temperature, but the semi synthetic detergent oil is easier to get and is relatively the same price. I have to order straight weight oils which increases the cost due to freight.

as always, this is not a recommendation, just my experience. take it for what it is worth. which is probably nothing, LOL.

All our diesel engines and old pickups, LP engines etc use Chevron Delo 400 15W40. Not likely to ever get below 20 degrees F here or over 100 F.

Note....we do not buy the LE formulation recommended for late model emission controlled diesel engines. The LE formulation cannot have high levels of zinc additive, but I am not sure the non LE still has it or not.

I expect most manufacturers have similar oils for the pre "tier" engines with flat tappet cams etc.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

My apologies, I didn't realize this was such a debated topic! I figured this would be an easy one for you guys. Sounds like either straight 30 or 15-40 will be fine

Do you really want to lubricate your engine with polymers?
Diesel rated 30W for me.
