If you use the old style inertial drive stater for the big motor, ( if you could find one) you can do it, but there are lots of electrical issues to sort out, as the big motor starter is 24 volt and the pony starter is 6 volt. If you were to go with 24 volt on the generator and main starting motor, and have the pony just a rope start it could be relatively simple. Almost anything is possible, just how much trouble and money is it worth.

I've added an MT 42 and a 50 to several D4U's and retained the pony on both. I use the ponies when I want to "impress" (read irritate) the neighbors, the rest of the time I just punch the button, a quick sniff of "goose juice" and away we go. Both had 12 volt systems and rather than do a bunch of changing around, I kept the 12 volt system and added another battery. To set 'em up with glow plugs would have meant swapping heads as neither was suitable for the precoms for glow plugs. Both would start easily in temps down to 10°F, below that I'd stay inside where it is warm😆

One D4 went to another good home a couple of years ago, the other one is still in my yard and gets used for various jobs year round.

Have heard of magneto shafts breaking, also drive gear I think. Several people associated it with the pony flywheel being loose on the crankshaft taper.

I think the modern starters can be used, probably have to turn the solenoid to the bottom to have clearance from the pony pinion clutch unless you don't have the side shields on the tractor. 12 volts is a good compromise for both pony starter and direct starter.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄
