Me and a good friend took a couple tractors to a recent plow day. Brought out the D2 and R2 both tractors are 1939 and put them both on a 5 bottom John Deere trip plow. The ground we were in was some heavy black gumbo and was none too dry to boot! The tractors did quite well, and actually worked together better that I expected. The whole combo turned a few heads and was a lot of fun to run! here is a video

Great video, those two tractors pulling together sure look cool. I've never plowed ground like that, clean black soil and not a rock in sight - I noticed the counters on that plow were only set about an inch deep, is there a reason for running them so shallow? In stark contrast with the deep sod that I plow, the closer down I can get them to the plow point the easier the plow is to pull and turns a cleaner furrow too. Then again my ground isn't tilled yearly either and is much different soil so that probably accounts for a difference too. Just curious, but again thanks for the video, way cool!

We were plowing soybean stubble which normally goes through the plow pretty easy, so you don't have to set the coulters too deep. If you were in say, stalk ground where there is a lot of trash it sometimes helps to set them a little deeper. Rocks are not much of a problem in this area of the country, but it is not uncommon to snag some debris from a long buried homestead from time to time! On older plows like this each individual bottom does not trip or have a shear pin. If you hit an obstacle the hitch is designed to come uncoupled instead of tearing the plow apart. This can be quite a pain in the neck because you have to hook the tractor back up and the darn plow is still stuck in the ground. You learn right away not to tie the plow's trip/lift rope to any part of your body, or secure it to tightly to any part of the tractor. More than one person has gone for a wild ride when the plow came loose from the tractor and they had the rope looped around their waist or arm! You find yourself laying with the plow while the tractor goes on its merry way without you!

Hi all
I farmed in Bridfewater,NY in 50 & 60's. We had 1959 D2 that pulled a 4 bottom 16" plus a klod busser.
We turned under mammoth red clover for corn grind. That year it turned very dry, I had to chain the plow to cat,
It keep unhooking, the field was almost a mile down, it first gear and one 3/4 of an hour to make one trip.
We were plowing on the deep side, 8" plus inches. 80 acres it took soon time!

That was I was young!

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
