I'm thinking of adding a plexiglass windshield to my 1954 D4 7U dozer. She has a homemade roof already,

It's a little smaller than 4x3' and will require some cutting around the air cleaner.

Hi, BeeWallow.

If we are talking about the same stuff, a jigsaw will cut plexiglass pretty easily - although the finished result does depend to a large degree on the skill of the jigsaw operator - and likewise on the skill of the person doing the marking out for the cuts. It drills pretty easy too but be careful if you are drilling near an edge or corner.

Plexiglass windshield - why?

Have you given any thought to the problems you will encounter with the dirt/grit etc, on the plexiglass? How are you going to clean it without scratching it beyond useable? Glass is difficult enough to keep clean and scratch free and it is much harder than plexiglass.

Hi, BeeWallow and CTS.

There are various products - Rain-X seems to be wunna the better ones - designed to make water bead on windows and run off - lessens the need to use the wipers, may also work on plexiglass but I'd try it onna small corner to see if it has any adverse effects. From the way it behaves on glass - puts a 'waxy' polished coating over it - it may also make cleaning plexiglass easier.

We used polycarbonate plastic sheeting out the front of our rock breaker windscreens in excavators, as it was harder than general perspex that would scratch if you walk past it.

Yes we looked for the Lexan product, the local shop didn't have contacts to get it so we missed out

lexan is just a brand of poly carbonate. same as perspex is a brand name for polymethylmethacryalte (acrylic) sheet.

A member from Idaho has a really COOL factory canopy for sale; the lid, posts, etc. Talk about keeping a machine original, here is a chance for someone to make theirs stand out and out of the blazing sun. JM

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
