Hi All, looking for the correct way to time the magneto on a PL Thirty. Have found a mark (vertical line) on the flywheel which matches a mark (vertical line) on the clutch cover housing, and I have clearance at No.1 valves. I assume this is a TDC mark. Is there a magneto timing mark somewhere?

Assuming you mean a PS Thirty tractor I have the following :-

For tractors S3101-up and PS1-up is as follows:- for the Bosch magneto points open 6 13/32" (30 Deg. BTDC) before TDC No1 mark on flywheel with No1 on compression stroke.

For Eisemann magneto points open 5 1/2" (25 Deg. BTDC) before TDC No1 mark on flywheel with No1 on compression stroke.

For tractors PS 13286-up is 51/2" before TDC

The timing for the earlier Thirties (S1001--S3100) is very complicated and S/No dependent on the S/No

for the correct camshaft settings to set the ignition timing.

For a PL Twenty the MAG timing mark should be found at 30Deg. BTDC (Before Top Dead Center)

This is what is written in the Twenty PL, and the Thirty Inserts in my 2 red Caterpillar General Instruction Book For Early Products--actually the books cover everything from the TEN to the Diesel Seventy Five.

I purchased these way back when they were announced in the Cat system while I was working at the Dealer for the sum of around $600 odd Australian because of the poor exchange rate that occurred after I placed the order and by the time of delivery--I think there was Gulf unrest at the time.

Hope this helps,

Eddie B.
