This is a picture of our first dozer we had with my dad standing by it in 1964. We got it when I was 13 years old. Our Cat mechanic installed a Dakota dozer on the old D-4 7J . My grandfather from my mother's side had a D-4 2T with an ATECO dozer that we had used periodically. My dad thought it would be a good idea to own one so we could use it whenever a need came up. Back in those days, our local USDA Soil Conservation District paid us to do creek control, that was clearing the channel of brush and trees and pushing the gravel up into the banks keeping the flow contained. We were paid $9.00 per hour and my dad gave me $1.50 per hour to operate it. I gained a lot of experience in the creek and got the hang of it.

Great photo Bob. Do you still own the D4 or know where it is? It would be cool if you could do the same pose alongside it.

That's neat Bob. I wish we had a dozer back when we were farming, let alone a camera to take a picture! Good old shovel and back breaking labor here. Crazy thing is, after we "retired" from active farming, my brother goes out and buys a CAT 416 backhoe and some other assorted labor saving devices that we needed 30 years earlier.

Crawler, my dad sold it after he picked up a D-7 3T farming tractor and had a Cat hydraulic dozer installed on it in about 1968. I don't know where it ended up. I have a job for the old 3T Wednesday morning cutting a slot down a really steep hillside for a new water line installation. The old tractor will still kick out some work. Juiceman, I know exactly what you are talking about "manual labor". The dozer made life a lot easier.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
