I need a part number for the hydraulic cylinder used for the toolbar blade on a D5B 98J. While i have allegedly every operation, maintenance, spare part, technical bulletin and special instruction manual for this dozer there is no reference to part numbers. REG00684-03 shows how to assemble and disassemble the cylinder. About halfway through under the heading Cylinders there are diagrams of the rod end that show the packing rings, retainer and rod wiper seal. I have smashed the retainer which is cast iron. There are no numbers stamped on the retainer but on the cylinder there is VBS8089. This number means nothing to Hastings Deering, my local Cat dealer. They also had never seen or heard about toolbar blades. Can anyone help me please?

Is there a s/n tag anywhere on the toolbar unit?
Should be on the forward face of the swivel upright.

None that i can find where i can see without disconnecting the blade. My local dealer is still searching and hopefully seeking help from Caterpillar who must have something on this. In the meantime I am starting to think about sourcing a third party cylinder of similiar stroke and bore. I assume i would have to have fairly similar so that the blade moves level?

Thankyou for your help. However it doesn't look right and I am starting to wonder whether I have in fact got a genuine cylinder. My local dealer has come back also with something different again that also doesn't look right although the design is similiar. I've asked for availability and price on the retained part number 2J3860 Retainer. I will try attaching the pdf they sent me when I work out how to do this.

The last bit for a while - my local cat dealer is quoting me AU $250 ex USA 7-9 days for what could be the wrong part. Now looking for a complete second hand third party hydraulic cylinder.

That does not look like the typical Cat manufactured tool bar arrangement.

That's what I was starting to suspect.
Thanks for you help though. At least I got to work out how to post images on the forum.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
