I am in the process of painting and reassembling my Cat Thirty. I removed and sandblasted the track pads and am about to paint them. I have heard it said that the mating surfaces between the pads and the track chain should not be painted in order to reduce the likelihood of the pads eventually working loose. My Thirty's working days are over and I intend to use it only to drive around the farm - maybe some light tillage work - but primarily just to enjoy and experience a vintage Caterpillar. If I paint the mating surfaces between the pads and chain, should I expect problems with the pads working loose as a result? Thanks.

Or you could just put some masking tape where you do not want paint, clean the surfaces first of course.:biggrin1:

Can you assemble the grousers to the the chains and then paint them all at once? even as a parade tractor, or a light tillage machine, the pads would work loose if there was paint between the grouser pad and the rails.

They will work loose with any work at all if the mating surfaces are not clean, put the whole lot together and spray them afterwards.

Thanks to all for your comments and advice. I will leave the mating surfaces unpainted. I am thinking I will mask off the mating surface on the chain links, paint them, then bolt on the pads and paint them. In this way, I will be sure of getting good paint coverage on the tops of the bushings and those areas of the links not readily accessible after the pads are installed.

I can not see a problem --

I ran track press for a Cat dealer, turning pins and bushings. Never worried about dust, or anything minor between plates and rails. If we had used a wire brush on each component, it would have been cost prohibitive! Press table was equipped with a 1" drive rattle wrench and sometimes had to use Victor to pull the bolts from one half, stacked plates and assembled in reverse order. Those bolts were TIGHT!

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
