Many, many posts ago, Old Magnet told me that

ya got in good this time

Well, he was absolutely right. I've stripped down the old D318 to see what was going on inside. The crank is .035 out. Bad main and rod bearings. Pistons are galled. Sleeves are scratched. Wrist pins, pin bushings, and rods seem to be all right. Still, its time for a major overhaul. I've had fun locating parts, but everything is starting to come together. Hopefully, I'll have it back running in about two weeks. It has been a learning experience, but one that I have enjoyed!

If you don't mind, when you get through, please post parts sources and costs so others can have some idea about similar projects.

๐Ÿ‘I know it'll be great to hear it fire up the first time!
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time๐Ÿ˜„

I can do already do that.

Weller Tractor Salvage
1 of 5H7375 - Crankshaft ground to .30 under - $1200 + shipping

Another place to check for cranks is Standard Crankshaft. They had a crank also, but it was ground at .20 under and I couldn't find bearings for that size that were a reasonable price. The crank was $1900 before a $200 core credit. A main bearing set for that size grind was $635 and $335 for the rod bearings!

Regal Corporation
(All bearings listed are for .30 under ground crank)
1 of 1H3729 - Front Main Bearing - $17.37 each pair
4 of 1H3730 - Intermediate Main Bearings - $12.11 each pair
1 of 1H3728 - Flange Style Main Thrust Bearing - $23.46 each pair
1 of 5H8021 - Back Main Bearing - did not have in stock. Would have been around $20.

6 of 9F8581 - Connecting Rod Bearings - $8.35 each pair

6 of 8H2001 - Piston Body - $45.46 each
6 of 9H1212 - Piston Ring Set - $7.00 each set
18 of 3S3977 - Cylinder Liner O-Rings - .41 each

1 of 9M4755 - Gasket Overhaul Supplemental Kit (Oil pan, flywheel housing, timing gear cover, etc) - $122.00

12 of 6B6224 - Large Water Director Ferrule - .51 each
4 of 7B2420 - Small Water Director Ferrule - .35 each

Regal did not have cylinder liners (shame, they probably wouldn't have been as expensive as what I paid for them)

Regal did not have a Gasket Overhaul Basic Kit

Western States Equipment (Local Cat Dealer)
1 of 5H8021 - Back Main Bearing - $156.44 (Paid full price! :mmph๐Ÿ˜Š. I checked several other places and could not locate this bearing for .30 under. I am under a time line to get my grader running or I would have been content to wait and continue searching.

1 of 9M4740 - Gasket Overhaul Kit Basic - $338.17 (Head Gasket, Manifold Gaskets, etc) I bought this before I got smart about searching a little. :embarassed:

Florin Tractor
6 of 4F6486 - Cylinder Liners - $75.00 each.

Local Machine Shop
Head cleaned and surfaced with a valve job - not done yet, but estimate $400-$500.

Total cost of project - $3435.64

This cost is do-it-myself cost with searching for best price / aftermarket parts. Compare that to the $8000 - $10000 quote from a mechanic.

A moderator may want to retitle this thread or create a new topic pointing to it so that people that are interested in rebuild costs will actually find it. I don't think the current title will attract much attention. Is there a sticky where people can post their builds along with part sources and costs?

raklet, you probably can edit in a title to your last post so it will come up on a search. Joe

The sticky already exists at the top of the post page.
Great information....don't want it to get away.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
