Old Magnet,

I seem to have lost power and fuel pressure on the D6-9u 24xxx serial. When I was in Bowling Green, the cat seemed to loose power. I thought the fuel filters went bad. Since I've been home I have made sure the main fuel line was running full flow with no restiction. Pulled the spring and seat to make sure it was clean. Changed fuel filters and cleaned tower. Blead all injector pumps, opening each all the way to make sure each was getting good flow.

So, the girl still will not get pressure into the green. It runs in the white on the guage. When I work her hard she drops to the bottom of the guage, not good😞 . Is it the transfer pump?

Sure sounds like the transfer pump....you've checked all the usual things. Any sign of fuel showing up where it's not supposed to be like rising main oil sump level or dribbling out the tell tale drain line that vents between the transfer pump seals?

OM,

Checked the oil level in the rack, oil did not seem deluted. No drips out of the tube.
Does the fuel pressure guage measure the pressure before the injection pumps? I think it measures the pressure in the tower doesn't it?

How about the main engine oil sump level.....any increase....that's where the fuel goes if you loose the fuel tower to pump seal.
Pressure is indicated after the filters and before the injection pump housing supply where you see the threaded port in the picture.

OM,

No signs of main oil level change, I'll look in closer detail, but no for now. It seems I'll rebuild the transfer pump. Is John Matta still working on them? Tell TractorDon I need some warranty work done on the cat he sold me.

Don't know if Matta is still reworking pumps or not....haven't heard any feedback or activity in a long time. Let me know if he is. Thanks

If that has the old plastic relief valve in the inlet side of the pump many times they get worn bad and not seat well and it also screws up (wears) the area in the pump body that it seats against so draw filing will help that area. As for the relief valve the newer ones were made of aluminun or other metal and have a rubber seat area on them.Another thing too is stretch that spring out there that controls the relief valve and that helps as I did that to 100s of them at the dealer. As OM said the pump might be getting worn out from old age.Usually a new body and gears and seals will repair them. The outside cover can be flat draw filed too if it is worn from the gears rubbing against it as I usually had to file them too with an over haul.

Thanks SJ,
Was going to come back with checking the valve seat but ya got it😊
Good point Mike, Glen, try running with the fuel cap loose.

Then it's into the pump for excess clearances.

Hi Glen.
Is the "we" rebuilt the transfer pump mean you guys did it in house or is there someone commercially or a home service repair providing the service?
