Old Magnet looking at possible purchase of Cat D4KXL. I assume this is a hydrostat machine. Do you know of any problems with this model? Here is a picture of it.

I haven't heard of much issue with these tractors - everything always comes down to hours, history of machine, abuse etc. Do you have the serial number of it I could look up the repair history of it for you on the Cat side of things.

Ironman here is a photo of the model & serial number plate but unfortunately I cannot make out the serial number. Called the owner and he did not have the serial number written down. Is it somewhere else on the machine?

Dick Tucker,
Your serial number is MMM00353 and that tractor was built on 5-19-2008.

d9gdon wonder if there are any recall notices from CAT on it. I thought the serial number was below MMM00353?

They are asking $72,000 for it has around 2,300 hrs and they say it has 70% rails left. Here are 2 pictures of it. I found past sales in Ritchie Brothers around $62,000 for a machine just like it. What do Yall think? It comes with a mesquite tree grubber and brush rack.

There's always "asking" and "getting". Probably not far out of line if you add in the attachments.
Start negotiating at the $62K.

Some questions:
What is the current type owner? private, rental company, construction company, lease, dealer? etc.

That red sand that it's in will eat an undercarriage up. Have somebody that knows what they're doing to measure it instead of accepting a guess from the seller. I'm not sure how familiar you are with dozers, but you can get over $10 thousand just in parts tied up in a new undercarriage, even on a small dozer like that.

It looks like a well cared for machine from what I can tell from the pictures. I've put probably 3-400 hours on the D6K's and the worst thing about them is the stupid thumb wheel to angle the blade. I had to wear a glove after the first day from a blister.

I looked up your serial number to get the build date, so I know that MMM00350 is correct.

I PM'ed you with some additional information on the machine - being it has 2300 hours I don't think the price is that terrible - I watch the auctions pretty close and 4000 - 8000 hour D4K's have been making $40,000 - $65,000 USD some has rippers or winches some just had a drawbar, some were LGP's - so as low hours as it is, and with the attachments they are offering with it, I don't think its terrible - Does it come with the ripper, the original build records show that it had a drawbar so they must have added the ripper to it after the original purchase, so there is added value if it comes with the ripper - I would however reach out to the local Cat dealer and have them measure the undercarriage so that you have the real data of where it is at - it could scale your offer depending where it is at - it is system one undercarriage on it which wears more equal and lasts longer than SALT undercarriage, but its not cheap to replace either if it is worn to bad. I would be shocked if the undercarriage is badly worn though, I know guys that have 6000-8000 hours on system one, on D6T's and D8T's, it all depends on soil abrasion. Hope this helps a bit.
