I found this really awesome piece of machinery in an outbuilding of an old railroad stop of the Florida Keys Railroad. It looks like it might have gotten there right after the Labor Day Hurricane in the 1930s. I'd love to learn more about it as in what exactly is it, when was it made, etc. I looked at serial numbers, but each part is individually numbered, so I am not quite sure where the main model number is. I'm attaching some pics, so maybe someone out there can tell me about it!
Thanks a million!

skynast,

What you found is a D4600 Electric Set. A close friend of mine has 2 of these.
I would realy like to find one of these. These are 30 kilowatt genorators and are also
known as 46-30 Electric Sets. They are some what rare. The D4600 refers to the engine
type[D means diesel and 4600 is the model]. Caterpillar also made these in a gas powered
version but are vary vary rare. Judgeing by certain parts on it it was manufactured
between 1942 and 1947. Hope this info helps.

Thanks, Josh

Cool!!
Now I can do some reading up on it! How much do you guys think this model might be worth? We are trying to save a historic building from demolition, and if we can raise capital by selling the generator, we would get that much closer to being able to do it.

Doesn't run. doesn't work???..so probably not worth much more than scrap value. They are just not all that rare or desirable...sorry.

If it were closer I'd buy it in a heart beat running or not.

Thanks, Josh

Hello Susanne: I have the 4 cylinder version of your generator, and I use it every power failure here. I got it free over 40 years ago, and it took some work and parts to get it running first class. Right now, I'm in the process of acquiring new brushes for the DC generator exciter, I didn't notice this externally mounted generator on top of the your AC generator? O.K. to get to the point, your find is in very poor condition judging from the pictures. If someone offered $100 just for a donation, let him take it away and be grateful. And Josh has his identification down very well!
Ciao, Tony

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
