Yes they leak, very common thing but it should drain out the bottom. Get underneith and see if drain holes are pluged with mud or someone put plugs in the holes if so just let drain, after they have drained for day or so if you need to put plugs in holes add few gallons of kerosene or diesel thru adjusting cover and run for awhile then drain and leave hole open

Could be coming from pinion seal, bevel gear shaft seal or over oiling the throwout bearing. Any of these could dribble down the sides and be carried around by the drum.

I'm wondering if maybe the wear on the brake linings is to the point of getting into the rivets or beyond? That and a little oil will really screw up the brakes. If the plugs have been out and it's still oiling up, maybe too much oil on the throwout bearings? I don't see how gear oil could be getting from the pinion all the way out to the brakes as it would have to get past the bearings first.

Just a thought. . .

I would take a piece of wire and bend it in an 'L' so you can put it in the drain holes and scrape around the holes to make sure there isn't a dam of gunk that's preventing complete draining. You could also see if the brake band support screws would screw out easily and allow any more oil to drain. Unfortunately there might be some water under the oil film that could cause rusting, so I certainly wouldn't force the screws and take a chance of wringing one off.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Thee are three oil cups on the floor for oiling the throw out bearings for the two steering clutches and the main clutch. You should look for an O&M manual for that CAT as it shows all of the places that require periodic lube. I think there are several listed on eBay as we speak.

Lube the throwout bearings with oil every 10 hrs in cups right under front edge of seet just behind where the steering levers pivot

Another thing you might check the trans and final drives to make sure they are not grossly overfull sometimes you get water down thru shifting boot and raises trans oil lever

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
