Can anyone tell me how to remove the oil filter housing/ canister holder. I'm trying to replace the o ring or gasket underneath. It turns but doesn't seem to loosen. I have the service mans and maintenance book and cant find info. I changed the oil and found that it was leaking at the bottom and the top. So I bought some new rings from cat. Thanks. You have to remove the filter cartridge and in the bottom center there is a nut that holds a plate down which goes across to the outer housing. I made a socket out of a deep well socket with the top cut off, I think its a 1 1/4" socket , with a steel tube welded to it with an eye through each side at the top to remove the nut.

You need a deeeeep socket to reach the retaining nut down inside. I cannot tell you the size, but I would check to see if a cheap 3/4 drive socket could be tacked onto a piece of pipe and reach it. Might have to cut the socket in two pieces and weld in the pipe

Hi Team,
a tube spanner is needed to undo what in the Parts Book is called a Screw--actually a nut that screws onto the main central stud-- it in turn holds in a tinplate clamp which holds the cannister onto the base when the top cap is removed.
Sorry I cannot recall the size of the hex, just knew which one to use from the Dealer tool crib.

From experience the lower square rubber "O" Ring will be as hard as coal. Happy chipping away to get it/them out as they likely have never ever been changed.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

The nut size for the full flow filter arrangement is 1-3/8".
The nut size for the by-pass filter arrangement is 1-1/2"

I took an old chainsaw file and ground an angle on the tapered handle end and used it as a chisel . Just tap lightly and follow the groove around the filter base and the old seal will chip out easily.
