This has probably been asked before.
I have a d7-3t, a 955 and a 1929 60. They all run good. I run each one about 10 hrs. per year.
The oil looks good on the stick. Should I change oil yearly or what do you think?
A lot of oil to change?

Howdy catmandoo,

I wouldn't be changing the oil yearly on those machines. As long as the oil is clean and shows no water or fuels mixed in I'd go many years between changes. I spent several years east of you working for Johnsonville Sausage, I still get up there yearly to visit. Good luck with your machines. Thanks.

i was taught to change the oil at least once per year. maybe you can find a use for the old oil?? i agree that is allot of oil but just imagine if you changed it every 100 hours all through the year.

i had a neighbor that was so poor he would take the oil out of one machine to use in another and then back again. same oil over and over until it had the hours on it then he would replace it with new.

I think oil is a lot better nowadays , I agree with other posters if it looks ok and hasn't gone watery from fuel contamination or milky from condensation I would guess it would be fine ,
Its possible to have an oil sample tested whether its cost effective over just changing it is another thing .. I would go for every other year oil changes ...

I don't on limited use machines as long as it looks good as mentioned. Every 2 or 3 years is all they get unless they do extra work.

I change oil and filter every 3 to 4 years as long as it looks clean and pressure is good at idle when hot

Pity the Twenty-Two owner - I think the operator's manual specifies oil change every 50 hours under clean operating conditions - less when operating in dusty conditions. And it's about 5 gal per fill (exaggerating but it's not a small amount). They have no post-oil pump filter.

That's about every 5 years on a hard use year.

Heh, that's right Roger, but I was meaning back in the day when they were the production machine : ) And to prove your point, I've yet to put 10 hours on that unit back in the old country and it was filled with fresh oil in 1993

Hello
On standby generators some of which did only 10 to 50 hours per year, we would take lube oil
samples (SOS) to control oil changes and change the filters every 12 months.
I believe we were told that after 2 years in service the oil filter material could start to deteriorate
and fail, so as to not mix up we changed them every year.

Well, thanks for the input. The one thing I do tend to do is change the oil in the pony motors.
They work very hard and they are gas engines. I also have test strips for the antifreeze which I use regularly.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
