I need to pick the brains of some of you guys who know gas truck engines.

I am working on my new to me 1966 IHC R185 truck. The other day I tried to start it. No go but found the wire from the battery loose on the starter so I tightened it up. When I touched the lead to the battery, the truck started to turn over. I disconnected the starter switch, which is separate from the key switch, and again when I touched the lead to the battery it tried to start. I tapped the starter and solenoid lightly and let it sit.

Today, I put the lead back on the battery and nothing happened so I reconnected the starter switch, turned on the key and it started right up. I later shut it off but left the battery connected. A few hours later, I was working on the carby at the picnic table and suddenly, the truck started to turn over by itself! I ran over and pulled the positive off the battery.

Do I need to call "Ghostbusters" or what? I'm looking for suggestions on what is causing this. Is there a short somewhere? If so, where would I look?

Thanks in advance!

Jan

Take the small wire off the solenoid. If it happens again it needs either a solenoid or starter. I'd replace both though.

It can start cranking while the engine is running and that's a bad thing, especially if you're going down the road.

I'm going to slightly disagree here. Run a temp small wire from the switch to the solenoid and see what happens. If it still happens replace as D8 said. If not either start pulling the harness apart to see where it's cross feeding from or just leave the temp wire in place.

It sounds like your starter and solenoid need some lube as the solenoid is not returning properly pull the starter off disassemble clean it spic and span some normal type of grease on the bearings and on the plunger in the solenoid and bendix doodah Bobs your uncle

at least thats what I would do I dont think it will take any new parts just a good clean and lube maybe file the disc in the solenoid you'll see what Im talking about when you get it in bits

good luck

Jan, don't believe anything these other 'experts' are telling you...your 'devil😈 truck' is in need of an immediate exorcism due to the fact that it doesn't like you...at all. I can help you out (because I consider you a friend) so just haul that Satan machine down to my shop and I'll take care of it for you. Of course you'll never be able to be re-united with it as that will bring the curse back.

Just leave the keys under the floor mat and don't look back.

Had a boat that wanted to do that. Ended up being a bad ignition switch.

Good Luck

My thought is after reading various replies is the ignition switch also! I am assuming this is a Delco type starter with the solenoid mounted on the starter to kick the bendix in/out? Generally(not always) the copper disk in the rear of it that contacts the Battery & Starter studs gets pitted & burnt causing slow cranking and hot connections. Oldtanker is searching for a bad wire in the harness which would be the direction to take after replacing the ignition switch. His reasoning is this is cracked/old cloth covered wire going through rotted grommets in the firewall. A switch that old will have carbon tracking and loose contacts inside allowing intermittent contact.

Glen,

Glad I could brighten up your day! I did not have that in mind when I posted my question but it was spooky sitting there with my back to the truck and hearing it suddenly start to turn over!!!!!!!!!!!! My wife came up with the "Maybe you have a ghost in the truck" idea when she heard it too and stuck her head out the door to see what was happening.

Maybe it is the Halloween season causing the trouble?

Thanks guys for your input. I guess I have to face pulling the starter off and getting into the solenoid. I'll also change the switch and run a new wire. I suspected the switch before and disconnected it but still had problems which tells me something is not right inside the solenoid.

Wait a minute! Has OIH been in there messing around with his new Cat/Lincoln welder? LOL!!!!!!!!!!

Jan - hoping I can successfully exorcize this thing!

Last couple of times I've had to trouble shoot older vehicles doing exactly the same thing continued to do what the OP describes after replacing the switch. Piece of wire and a couple of connectors are cheap and reusable. Trying it before throwing parts at it is a form of troubleshooting. I like to eliminate all possible problems before I start changing parts. That's why I suggested trying the wire first. Another simple way to eliminate the solenoid as the problem if you can safely reach it is to disconnect the small wire once it starts cranking on it's own.
