I am putting a Charlinn power steering unit on my 1952 Super M. I need some questions answered for the plumbing of the hydraulics. I can't get on redpower site so if you know anything about the correct way to plumb the ps unit give me a call or pm me. I have the belt driven pump off of the parts tractor but I would have to change the crankshaft pulley because mine has only 1 pulley not 2. I would like to use the live hydraulic pump to power the ps unit. Any help would would be good
Thanks

They just use the single pulley and a longer belt to power that pump.

I agree with you, seems a shame to have to add a pump when you have one already on there and functioning. But I know nothing about your tractor.

One thing you need to know is whether the existing pump/circuit can be tapped so the steering valve has priority ahead of whatever other hydraulic functions the tractor has.

Many modern tractors with simple hydraulic systems have a separate section of the hydraulic pump dedicated to steering. This may be because the main section is too big for the steering valve to give proper response, but it does take care of the priority.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

The power steering is after market. Today I loosened the front of the parts tractor and mover it forward an inch. The pulley was pinned on to the end of the crank with the pin used to crank it. The added pulley butts up to the fan belt pulley and is held tight by a tapered boss cast into the pulley. I started to put the new to me ps parts onto my Super M. If I remember I will get some pictures. What I am looking for are pictures of an early Super M plumbing from the pump to the valve. The person I bought this tractor from bypassed the factory setup completely and mounted a hydraulic tank on the side of the frame and mounted a single spool valve on the steering column support. It works well but looks like he--.

if you only have one pulley on the crank you can use a lawn mower belt and a jockey pulley to drive a extra pulley but you have to use a lawn mower deck type belt they are designed to bend both ways and bend really sharp as well

I mounted the parts today, steering shaft with hydraulic motor but when I went to mount the pump the fan hits the belt. I talked to a Farmall guy to day and he gave me some ideas how to move the fan away from the belt. The water pump is driven by what IH calls the water pump drive. the pulley on the water pump is not bolted to the hub but drives thru a t shaped spring loaded bar that is pinned to the water pump shaft. Because of that you can't just put a spacer behind it. I have some ideas and will let you if it works.
Thanks

thanks for all the help. I was able to mount the belt driven ps pump by spacing the fan 3/8" out from the water pump. All I have to do is put the sheet metal back on and it is good to go. I have some more sweet corn that has to get planted.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
