The Steam Locomotive has always been of interest to me and now the Big Boy 4014 has been restored and is once again on the rails between Cheyenne WY and Ogden UT. Check out the awesome videos of this huge behemoth.

Originally used in the 1940's and 1950's to pull freight over the Wasatch Mountain Range between Cheyenne and Ogden. I hope to see it in operation in July of this year when we are in the area. We will spend some time at Sherman Hill.

Looks like 844 was doing most of the work on the first trip.

I have been watching 4014 videos all week. Rumor has it 4014 has a bad cylinder packing on the left front engine. Not bad enough to stop the trip.

Thank you for the posting!

Having ridden behind UP 844 and UP 3985 along with many other steam locomotives on many other lines, this is very refreshing to see 4014 back on her rails!

What a wonderful and very expensive restoration by the UP Steam crew!

So what it looks like to me is there’s about nine cars... so it’s a diesel pusher trying to push all of them and then some? Because out here you’ll see like 30 or 40 cars at the most And maybe two engines

Its just a display run for now, the diesel is for electric power for the passenger cars. These engines used to pull car lengths of up to five miles.

They're running it light to begin with to identify all the teething problems that come with bringing a unit into service after an extended outage. Rod glands are a very common issue on steam engines, and hot bearings on locos, just like flat tires somewhere on a rig are. So the diesel and 844 enabled 4014 to run under light throttle so as to identify these issues without causing unnecessary damage, while of course enabling some good PR! : ). I'm looking forward to them pulling a capacity load and hearing it bark

I was told that the diesel was for back up only. One of the cars has a generator in it for power for the cars.

Last train I rode had 2 generators in a car along with sleeping compartments for the employees.
WOW!
Talk about noisy but if the genny quit at night they would at least be the first to know!
