numbers and letters? what do they mean?

I have a cat d47j1772, I know its a d4 made in 1940 but what do the 7 and j signify? i am sure this has been covered before but in 3 years of lurking i have missed it. i am also interested in putting a hyster d4 winch on it, will any of them fit or do i need to look for a special model. also what manuals should i get for this. I have the operators and parts manuals but whould like more. it has a laplant choat blade and hydraulics.

The 7J is just a unique series of Caterpillar tractor. Other than sometimes signifying wide or narrow gauge tracks and being about the same age as other XJxxxx series equipment, it doesn't seem to mean anything in and of itself.

Later series had more than 9999 machines ( for example 9U20813) and also later than that change, XXYxxxxx series were used (41Y0187😎. If you call a CAT dealer for parts, sometimes you get someone so young they don't know how to handle the older series without the 2 digits ahead of the letter and they will report back that you have an incomplete serial number. If so, I believe the procedure is to add a zero ahead of the series (09U20813)

I worked for a CaT dealer but we never gave it a 2nd. thought but to my experience all they do is designate the particular model & era as in your case the 7J.The numbers change with some models to designate if it,s a narrow or wide gauge tractor like a 6U D4 is the narrow gauge & the 7U is the wide gauge tractor.That,s about all I can say about answering your question.Also too they can designate what country they are made in esp. with some little later tractors where some are built in other countries.
