Last weekend I picked up a Fiat/Allis FD5 crawler dozer. It's 70 hp with 6 way blade, about the size of a D3 and built in 1989 or 90.

It's in really good shape with under carriage in 90% or better condition and the engine runs good. The hour meter shows 980 hours but isn't working now.

I was doing a little dozing with it, straightening out some washouts in my woods road and noticed in a hard push that the dozer would angle back on its own. Would the oil be slipping by the seals in the ram or would it be in my control valve?

Also in regards to hydraulic oil; my maintenance manual calls for MIL-H-24459 or DIN 51524 51525, 10W or 20W depending on temperature. What do these numbers mean?

Thanks for any replies.

That first oil is just a military spec oil and the second one is just a different standard for hydraulic oil. They're like SAE or ISO if you've heard of them, they're different standards of oils that some particular society decides is a benchmark for a class of oils.

Your problem would seem to be in your hydraulic cylinders, but that's not guaranteed. Like you say, it could be the control valve. Feel your hydraulic cylinders after running a while. They'll be super hot if the oil is bypassing.

i don't know if there is one or not, but something to check into. there might also be a circuit relief valve that is relieveing pressure within the cylinders, you say "in a hard push" is it possible that the force you are applying to the blade could be lifting a circuit relief valve to protect the hydraulic components in the circuit? most of the six way PAT blades are not really designed for heavy duty bulldozing, more for trim work and finishing.

I have been told a cylinder having oil leak past the seals will heat up very fast. So feel temp and make the push that moves it a time or 2 and then compare temperatures to other cylinders not in that circuit. If it is warmer than others repack cylinder,if not your problem is else ware.

To determine if the center packing is leaking past in a cylinder I tie the attachment with a good chain or otherwise block it so the cylinder is stopped with the ram half extended. Hold the control to bypass the pump for a few seconds. The one that is leaking will get warm quick. If you got two people or can reach while bypassing you can feel it getting hot.
