Good day all,

I've got a line on an 8T that runs but is apparently stuck in gear. I have not seen it in person but here's what I'm told: it is an 8T but unsure of serial #, Hi-Lo not stuck, speed selector stuck in 2nd.

My first thought is the interlock mechanism not functioning or bound up rusty shifter linkage.

Is there some other tranny problem common to these graders?

Thanks in advance

Hi, Bruce P.
Like you, my first thought was interlocks and/or associated linkage, INCLUDING the control shaft from the bottom of the shift lever to the lever at the entry into the 'box. There is a slide on that on that linkage that may be bound up with old grease, dust and other crap and is not allowing movement of the linkage. Do a 'Garlic Pete' on it and lube the daylights outa everything in sight under the cab. It may even be worth hitting it all with some form of 'loose juice' to try to free it before applying the 'lasting slippery stuff'.

Here is a scan of the linkage from the service manual:

Points 2 and 3 are the ones I am thinking may be the problem. I would investigate these before the interlocks as they are easier to get at and directly involved. It may be slightly different on the 8T 'cos this scan is from a 99E manual but the main shifter linkage will be pretty much the same.

The only other possibility that I can think of would be that it has somehow managed to 'jump' the selector forks, something that I have never had happen to me nor have I ever heard of it before. These are usually one VERY dependable transmission.

Just my 0.02.

Thanks Deas, hopefully I'll be able to go look at it soon.

If anyone is looking, there is a 9U farm Cat and a 3T logging cat for sale at this same place. John Hahn says the 9U is pretty nice and the 3T is a little tired but not beyond repair. I'll get some pictures and pass along a contact when I know more. They are near Spokane Wa.

Hello all, I have talked to the owner and the Grader SN is 8T 20.

Sounds like the 9U is sold and the D 7 might be. I'm going up to look at them next week.
