I have what I think is a no 3 hi way patrol cat grader. It used to have steel wheels on spokes, and before I got it someone cut them off and welded car wheels on it. I am wondering if anyone has found modern hubs that would fit original spindles which are 1 3/8 inch on both ends.

That sounds like a really interesting old machine. If it’s a No. 3 Hi-Way Patrol grader, you’ve definitely got a piece of history there. The original steel spoke wheels getting cut off is pretty common on older equipment, unfortunately.

For the 1 3/8" spindles, you might have a few options. Some people have had luck adapting trailer hubs or agricultural hubs, especially from older farm equipment, but it usually requires machining bushings or sleeves to get a proper fit. Standard modern hubs typically won’t match perfectly without modification.

Another route is checking with vintage machinery forums or salvage yards that deal in antique graders or early road equipment-you might find original hubs or something closer to a direct fit. Custom machining a hub to fit your existing spindles is also a solid (though more expensive ) option if you want to keep things as correct as possible.

If you can share photos or more measurements (bearing spacing, spindle length, etc.), it would be easier to narrow down compatible options.

I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
