We had trouble with the valve control for the steering clutches one side would not drive. After checking the final drive we tracked it to the valve, cleaned and it got it moving smoothly. Now are looking for the spot to replace the filter for it. Finning Cat gave us one but we can't find where it goes. Help please.

Check under the floor deck on the RH side ( square deck plate w/ 4 bolts, underneath a filter canister w/ 6 bolts) if it's a 36a Cat moved the trans filters up to the RH side of the engine on the 46a, not sure what year

the brake on one side has come apart, we think and let chunks of junk go through the system. Told when we purchased it that the brake had just backed of and wouldn't stay snug. 😞 live and learn

Probably a 1 piece brake band , if so you will need to pull the steering clutch to replace

Thanks we will take a look. We found the stacked filters at right hand rear of the engine beside the engine filters. But this other filter has us stumped. It is a smaller filter. We have a 46A 16248

Might be final drive filter? Why don't you call cat and ask what filter is for? Did you clean your transmission pump screen?

Good luck

Finng Cat probably gave you a final drive filter . Its about 3" in dia ,and about 8"to 10" long. Each final drive has its own filter accesseed by removing a small cover at the back of the tractor main case, up top on the right and left sides .each final drive have a pump mounted in them that pumps oil up to the filter and to the bearings internally for each final drive .Remove 2 3/8's bolts ,and pull the cover ,and filter out of rear main case

What's the part number on the filter element?
46A11264 to 46A23357 used a single element filter (fairly large)
46A23358-up used two smaller elements. You may have one of those?

Thanks I will grab it tomorrow and find the number. When my wife asked the parts guy where it went all he could tell her was it is in the line somewhere. Our old girl is a 46A 16284 Our Cat had two stacked elements near the right hand rear of the motor.

Not sure Bob we cleaned two magnetic screens. Some one put a piece of steel in way of the access on the skid plate. So we are having a hard time trying to find all the screens etc.

Apart from the replaceable elements you found at rear of engine compartment, you should find a magnetic filter and screen in the engine bay and also another under the seat. Sorry I cant remember which, but one of those collects from brake compartment and the other from torque converter if my memory is good, its 24 years since I last operated a D8H. That ser # signifies it is a 270hp tractor and will also have the heavier final drive bearings on inside of bull gear. It is not a big job to re line a brake band, park tractor on hard level surface and move with a hydraulic jack to undo studs through inspection plug hole holding clutch to outer flange. Brake drum will have heat cracks, don't fuss about them unless they are extremely bad.
