After the show Friday, I spent the night at Sylvan Beach on Lake Oneida. Oneida Lake is about 1.5 hours from the show and I had found this place several years ago after driving thru this town, picking up caterpillar parts I had bought on ebay.

Anyways, this is a very small town and saturday morning we saw this on our way to breakfast..... They were using the crane to trim trees as the trees were located near the lagoon behind the homes. The stick on this massive crane was fully extended and the whole thing went over. Apparantly the owner was running the crane. As you can see, the counter weight was safely on the trailer and not on the crane. While they weren't lifting a heavey load, they were using the boom at an angle closer to horizontal than vertical- the reason it went over.

No One was hurt or injured.
The crane just missed power lines when it was upset.
The boom of the crane took out two boats in the lagoon which were still being held underwater by the crane.
Fuel spill on the ground from the crane and also in the water from the two submerged boats.

Someone was not thinking, or is inexperienced, most of these accidents are just foolish, sheesh, it's not that big of a deal to put that weight on. Apparently no buzzer or auto shut down, I had an engineer size a crane wrong once, working radius was too short, the pick was only about 2 ton, once we got to the limit the 65 ton Grove RT series shut off and the load was hanging. I brought in a 175 ton ( about the size of the one in the photo) the next morning and got er done, operator on that Grove, somehow wriggled that boom back and got us working again, just had to leave that pick for the larger crane. I did a lot of work with rough terrain cranes up to 500 ton, and there are a lot of things to know and consider, or what is shown will happen, every time, hate seeing something like that happening when it could have easily been prevented.

Here is information for the Newspaper article...

SYLVAN BEACH — .A Sylvan Beach home and several boats were damaged Saturday when a crane collapsed on Vienna Road, state police said.

A 130-ton crane owned and operated by Walter Platt of Williamstown was taking down trees behind a residence at 1116 Vienna Road at about 8:23 a.m. when the accident occurred. A large tree limb caused the crane to tip forward and the fully extended boom to crash to the ground, police said.

A rear deck on the residence and three boats docked along the Mariner’s Landing canal were damaged by the crane and debris. The state Department of Environmental Conservation later was called to assist with leaking diesel fluid and hydraulic fluid from the crane and the boats, police said.

The accident temporarily closed Vienna Road between Route 13 and Kenwood Avenue, and is still under investigation, police said.

With all the the Crane issues that have been in the news the last few years I would bet the insurance to operate one is HUGE

Great Pics Matt, Thanks for posting
