I have acquired a D-4 Catepillar with the HT4 Traxcavator unit with a serial number of 35C1446 on the plate over the pony motor. My question is I need a manual for the D-4 but all I can find are manuals just for the HT4 shovel unit.

Where would the serial number for the D-4 crawler be located at?

Thanks, davh

Hi Davh.
Welkum too ther 4um.

On the rear left of the steering clutch case. A D4 7U manual should give you most of what you want but there are some 'SUBTLE' differences between the 7U and the tractor in the HT4 too. Others will chime in here with more detailed info..

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Thanks for the response. Just from past experience, the serial numbers are very important and being fairly new to this it is great to have help from experienced people. Look forward to the project and will need all the help I can get!!

Thx davh

There is no separate service manual for the HT4. It uses a combination of the D4 Service Manual, Operators Manual and Parts Manual plus the HT4 loader manual that you have discovered.
Here's the s/n tag locations.

Thanks so much! Needing the manual and serial to find year of machine and info on the pony motor. No fire to plugs and someone broke the electric starter casing and need to find the right starter for it.

Thanks again! davh

Forgot one.
Same arrangement of manuals - service-operation-parts manuals for the #44 hydraulic system also. S/n is on the tank in a location you can't hardly get to on the HT4.

Looks like I need 3 or 4 different manuals for a complete set. Hope there are downloads for these. Thanks for all the info. davh

So far, no one has taken on the project of scanning all the manuals and making them available online. They are mostly still available from CAT through their reprint service or some of the other, usually lower quality reproductions like Jensales.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Soon as I can locate the serial number for the D4 and the engine serial number I need to get a service manual. Any thoughts on what is the best manual or most complete for repair?

the 2 yellow books r what u need, 1 is 4 the engines and the other is 4 the chassis. then u need the operators & instruction manual, then probably the 44 hydraulic book, and 4 sure the parts 4 your s/n range. 5 in total. get serial number 4 correct parts book. i think i got the seldom seen parts book 4 the ht4 loader. u won't really need it though. go to ebay 4 books, try not 2 pay more than 20.00 each 4 them. not more than 10.00 4 parts book. heres some info about starter bendix housing. good luck.

Really appreciate the manual info. After trying to locate manuals online it was becoming difficult to determine the best or even what all I needed.

Sounds like the starter housing issue is not a rare issue. Thanks much for the info on it also.

Can't wait to get going on this project again. Thanks, davh
