Hey there guys and gals,

Im the owner of a 1968 high hp (according to the serial number) machine. I have a couple of questions about it, and you will have to forgive my terminology if I say something incorrect, as well as bear with my explanations.

The first thing I would like to ask you guys, my machine starts up great off of the pup, but does have a little bit of a whine to it, that gets louder while idling. Ive tried to track down the noise, but its seemingly impossible, if anything I would say its coming from either the turbo, or just behind the engine.

There is a couple of levers on the right hand side of the drivers seat that can get moved perpendicular to the drivers seat, and I dont know what they do, but it seems like when I play with those levers, the noise changes.

I have a winch on my machine, and I have no clue on how to get it to work. I had figured maybe those levers beside the drivers sear would have something to do with it, but they dont seem to do anything.

I used the dozer a little today, I had let it warm up for maybe 15-20 minutes, and then played with it for 15-20 minutes, and at the end of it all, the breather on the winch was steaming out some oil, and the side of the winch was very warm.

So Im not really sure where or what to check. i could probably get a video or a few pictures if my explanation sucks.

We did check all of the fluids that we could find, and everything was within reason.

Im also new to this machine, and I have no idea what sounds are acceptable and what sounds arent, for all I know, this could be normal!

Thanks in advance.

Ok I just went and took a video, Ill post the photobucket link here. I also noticed on shut down, that there is a super huge squeal. I could it be possible that I just need fan and alternator belts? (of course I didnt get a video of the shut down haha)

At the very end of the video is the breather where it is leaking.

No!!!! that noise is not normal. Sounds to me like the hydraulic pump for the power winch control is screaming. Have you checked the oil level and filter/s for the winch?
Pump is located under the floor board, right hand rear of engine.

Unit should not be run until problem is corrected or expect/if not already damaged.

The winch pump is running dry!! probably shot now. go through and inspect the winch oil and filter.

Thanks guys, will do! Is a winch pump hard to find new or used/tough to change?

Ok, so heres what I have done.

I started up the dozer and drove it in front of the shop, with it squealing away.

I took off the right side (passenger side) footboards, and "played" with those levers beside the seat. Im really not familiar with this dozer at all, but I can only assume what I did, was had the winch engaged with the levers, and something isnt working right with the winch, so the pump was trying to push oil and it wasnt going anywhere, just heating up.

I didnt change the filter (in my video I took a picture of it, can someone verify please?) all I did was check the fluid levels again, I put the levers into what I think is the neutral position, and I started the dozer up, let it run for a little bit, and the squealing or whiny noise went away.

I did smell a little burnt oil smell when I took the floor boards off, but that has went away now as well. I realize I should probably change the oil.

Does anyone by any chance have a service manual for sale on pdf? Or something I could check out so I could familiarize myself with this machine at all?

Posted a video below.

The screaming noise was most likely a relief valve lifting due to control levers being out of sync. Late models have both a pressure and suction filter. Did you check oil level in the winch? Holds about 20 gallons. You'll be lucky if no damage was done.

You can read up on the winch here.....

ebay is the best source for original manuals on the tractor.

Thanks a ton on the links for the manuals fellas!

I really appreciate all the help on this ol brute!

I havent checked the fluid level on the winch yet. I just found a manual for the winch tonight. Looks like its as simple as just taking the plug out and looking though.
I cant really seem to find any more filters than just the one for the hydraulics. Is there a place where a guy should be looking for them?

What model winch do you have ? D7K?
Should have a suction screen/filter in the winch itself. Behind cover plate. Pressure filter up by the controls.

The model of the winch is a hyster d7h I believe. I can go see if I can find any numbers on the winch tomorrow (if i have time, im in charge of my little girl and celebrating halloween tomorrow!) and I will post them up if I can find anything.
