Hello fellow CAT lovers. I have been pursuing each and every piston maker in the US and even China, and I am trying to convince them to make new aftermarket pistons for these machines.

In order to give me some "clout", I am wondering who may want to buy a set if they become available. I figure (just a SWAG) that there must be 2000 or so machines still out there in running or potential running condition. My hope is that I can say "I know X number of owners that would buy them" if you made them at a decent price.

I have to say that I have gotten some interest from at least one very capable supplier. I do not want to say who yet so it don't jinx the deal. My initial thinking is to convince them to make 100 pcs or so. I am a mechanical engineer, and I have fully modeled the piston in 3D and made mechanical drawings of the piston and pin to provide to vendor, if they need it. It has been my mission for a couple of weeks to see what can be done.

Chime in now if you would be interested to buy a set!!!

They would be for a D3400 Cat engine which that D2 uses and they are 3 3/4" bore engines.

I would be interested in (4) if they are available oversize and dependent on price.

Didn't the early D2's have the D311 engine? And what about sleeves? Would these be .020 over and we would have to bore the old sleeves???

Early D2s were the D3400 engine. I am targeting stock size at first. I put new liners in my engine. I can ask about oversize when that time comes.

So, there are enough new liners around? Would be a shame to get new std pistons and then can't find liners when needed. And rings? Would it be cheaper to rebore old liners a little bigger than buy new liners. There should be no difference in making std or .020 pistons. Just a thought.

hello ,my thought would be make .060 over size and then could be machined down to what ever size needed ,you would have a bigger market for the pistons ,just a idea to think about but some people in the know would have a better idea than me 😄 ,bruce oz

Yes I will inquire. I just want to see if they will do anything first, then I will ask about O/S. Is .020 the typical oversize?

John, can I put you on the list that want some (O/S of course)?

There is a company here in Australia caled J.P Pistons that makes pistons sets for the D2/ D4 pony motors, I got a set 3 weeks ago. I'm 99% certain they cast them all 80 thou oversize, then machine them down to your required size.
Based on current exchange rates it is about $US110 per barrel for piston, rings and gudgeon pin.
If sleeves are hard to find or expensive, it probably makes sense to bore the originals and go for oversize pistons.
Good luck with the project.

The pistons for the pony motors are round. I think the ones for the main motor are "cam" ground. If you need to turn down those pistons to size then you will have to find someone with a piston turning machine.
