Hi everyone,
just joined and would like to show off my D8 which I've owned for about 6 or 7 years now. I purchased it for single purpose (every 5 years) , to haul a 100 ton small ship out of the water on a 100 foot trailer custom built for the purpose. Unfortunately, the owners of the ramp where this was to happen, had a change of heart and hence, I had to make other arrangements, (hauling in our lock system). I eventually sold the trailer but still have the D8 in inventory. She's been offered for sale several times but no serious buyers.
Although she looks clean and runs great, I intend to give her a new coat of paint (todays Cat yellow) before I try to sell again.
From what I've seen out there for this vintage, this is a sweetheart as is! It's serial number is 14A3913 which makes it a D8F Cat. built between 1956 and 1957.
I assume she has Direct drive with oil-cooled steering clutches and brakes.
It's engine model number is D342 producing 191 HP.
She's been professionally converted from cable drive to hydraulic some time ago before I purchased her.
Her pony starting motor works great and will start in cold weather. I'm not sure if my cable winches work or not at this time.
Anyway, just wanted to say hi. Have a look at the attached photos. I also have a video of her in operation which I'll post later.

Regards,

Cap

HI,
I'm located in Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada. While I have $ 16,500 "invested" in this machine, I will accept more. LOL. Seriously, any reasonable will be considered. I just ordered a set of Repair manuals and a parts manual from Ebay and expect to have them in a few days.
Here is a link of us moving the Cat from my friend's "back forty" to a construction yard.

Hello Cap,
There is NO such thing as cable drive. It has a hydraulic dozer blade and was not converted over from cable. The unit on the back of the tractor is a Double Drum Cable Control Unit, (DDCCU) used for pulling a scraper or a pull ripper. On tractors not equipped with a hydraulic dozer blade, then the unit was also used to raise and lower the dozer blade but not in your case. That is NOT a winch. catskinner

Sorry, not on for a few days but thanks catskinner for setting that straight.
Must admit I'm a little embarrassed about how much I don't know about this machine but considering my intended usage, it looked like a good fit at the time. My D8 repair and parts manuals arrived but no mention of the cable control devices (not winches). I engaged the operating lever recently and while the diesel groaned a little, the drums remained cemented. A closer look indicated that the shoe like, brake drum like device was frozen stiff. As my manuals don't cover this device, can you tell me what make these are or what steps I can make to make them operational?

CCU's are covered in separate manuals. Get the s/n off the unit, most likely a #29 model 56Cxxxx s/n or a #127 model (almost the same) with s/n 31Exxxx

Hi,

I'm back with some Pictures and numbers as they don't seem to match those provided by Magnet. Have a look at my Uploaded Pics and note the number 9D3573.
I guess the Photos got loaded back on my opening page.

That's a # 25 cable control which runs off the trans, a #29 is live and runs off the engine via a drive shaft under the deck

Dpete,

Got it right, it’s a number 25 and an early one at that, my book shows it as 1947. Stating with number 3221 through 6800for the year 1947.
