I love the site, there’s a lot of smart folks on here and I hope to learn from you all.

So I have a 1955 5U D2. About 12 years ago I had a neighbor come over (moved away now) and adjust the steering clutches. Right side is maxed out and the left is pretty much nonexistent. Forward clutch still works fine. I have a feeling I’ll end up having to tear It all down, but I don’t have a diagram or parts list. I have a little bit of disking to do before I can tear It down. Does anyone have a diagram or parts list? I can’t find any pictures or videos.

Also, anytime It sits, I have to crack the injectors and bleed the air out of the lines. Im assuming I have to replace the o rings in the injector pump. How hard of a job is this? Im only 20 minutes from CAT HOLT in Stockton, Ca. So getting parts shouldn’t be an issue.

Someday when I can build a shop, I’ll end up tearing It down and rebuilding the whole thing, but in the meantime I just need It to keep 3 acres of tumbleweeds down. Hopefully you fellas can get me pointed in the right direction. Thank you!

There was a fellow in the Southeast (Kentucky?) that just did a overhaul similar to what you are describing. I think his Threads with photo's were started back in the Spring?
Then there is Neil in NYS who has done extensive rebuilding on D2's. He did a lot of photo's also.
There are a couple of other Threads on undercarriage work but its too early in the morning for me to do a SEARCH for you.
Did you try the SEARCH in the upper right hand of your screen?
PS
Post your Serial Number so that anyone referencing their Library will get the right series as there were several iterations of part numbers.

Hello 55' and welcome to the forum! You really are working blind until you find and purchase 1) 'Operator's Instructions' manual. 2) 'Parts manual'. 3) 'Servicemen's Reference Book'. Some folks on the BB sell Cat related manuals, so place a post on the 'For Sale/ Wanted' forum or look on e-bay, but be careful as there are some sellers that think their manuals are worth their weight in gold! 😖cared:

We need pictures! 👍

BTW, There are a couple of local ACMOC chapters up your way with lots of knowledgeable Cat folks that would be able to give you hands-on advice. If you're interested in joining one, go the the ACMOC home page, click on 'Chapters' then click on California to view the local chapters along with contact info for each. Good luck!

Thank you very much! I’ll do some searching through the forums. I’ve found a few different manuals on eBay, but wasn’t sure which ones I needed. Im going back out there today so I’ll take some better pictures. My dad taught me how to run It when I was about 10. Absolutely love It. Nothing else quite feels like an old crawler.

Welcome to the bulletin board. That’s a snazzy little D2. I like it! Looks like DE start to me, so good batteries and a healthy priming of the pump might be in order.
We like photos. Next ones should be of it churning up some dirt!
Thanks for sharing. JM

Try keeping the tank full.

Your fuel system has a small leak somewhere that allows air to seep in when it sits a long time. Fuel filter tower cover and filter plate gaskets and the bleed screws are prime candidates for this.

There really aren't o-rings in the injection pumps that typically seep fuel out or let air in. The individual pumps mount to the housing with the hold down bolts visible between them and there is a seal under the back of each one. These seldom cause problems though.

One particularly troublesome seal is on a ferrule sandwiched between the back of the filter tower and the injection pump housing. That one usually results in diesel diluting the oil and overfilling the engine crankcase when it fails, though I suppose it could also let air seep in.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Welcome. You have come to the right place for advise from those who know. I recently replaced a steering clutch on my 5U and trust me I am not a mechanic. Without the people on this board I would have been lost. I just posted what I hope is the final question on how to put it back together. You will see it all under Potato Heads D2 repair.

Good luck. You have a good lookin' machine.

Will the book for a D4 be the same as a D2?

If your loosing fuel in the injection pump housing then check the engine oil, it may be diluted and could cause bearing failure. The seal between the injection pump and filter housing is probably bad.

I don’t recall seeing a fuel filter housing, just the hard line going From the tank to the injection pump, but I’ll go through all my lines and see what I find. It’s frustrating to waste a new battery just tonptime all the injectors.
