Hello,

I recently acquired a 1966 Cat 955H to do some work around the ranch and light quarry digging. Quite a few questions have popped up as we have been looking it over and assessing the machine. I'm looking forward to learning as we go along. As a note of interest this thing was originally used in the LOF glass plant in the Central Valley of California. LOF made lots of automotive glass so any of us muscle car guys might have some glass from this plant in you hotord. A short list of questions:

1) What kind of oil do should I use in the steering system? Engine? Hydro?

2) There seems to be a very slow leak coming from the rear of each track. Nothing too bad. Should I replace these seals immediately?

3) The reverse stick will not engage hi speed (2). Can I adjust something to correct this?

4) The engine side covers are missing. Should I be looking for a set?

5) Would a '66 model use the standard "CAT yellow" that is commonly available or is there a resto paint code I should have mixed up? It needs some touch-up...everywhere!

6) I understand that this model, being foot steer/brake has wet clutches. I have to STAND on the pedal and get up on the throttle to get it to turn. It does not surprise me considering the era of the machine (kind of like my old Power Wagons) but is it normal to drive these things like you hate them? I assumed that not slipping the steering clutches would extend service life like any other clutch.

Thanks for reading!

1--Cat recommends TDTO4 oil in power shift Tranys and wet clutches, I use straight 30W series 3 motor oil, aw46 hydraulic oil in hydraulic system
2--probably leaking around the sprocket seals--keep an eye on final drive fluid levels and they may slow done after a bit of use
4--if you are going to be working in trees/brush I highly recommend side panels
5--I think that year used the old cat yellow
6--make sure your clutch and brake linkage are adjusted correctly---you should be able to depress each pedal partially and the machine will come to a stop/roll if the steering clutches are releasing correctly

Thank you all for the replies. I am getting things rounded up to do some general maintenance. Looking this thing over I am thinking an electric or pneumatic grease gun will be a necessity. Any suggestions on what I should be looking for? I thought pneumatic would be the ticket but figured it best to ask before purchasing.
