Thought I'd share our latest find with you all. The Forty Diesel, 3G318 was found in the middle of Illinois nestled in a machine shed. In 1991, the owner had backed her in a shed, put on a fresh coat of paint, then died within a year. So there the old girl sat until yesterday.

The tractor appears to be pretty complete and in good shape. Undercarriage is good, both engines are free, feel like good compression, and the tin is pretty good.

The main clutch is working, but a rough pull and does not go over center. Right steering clutch appears to be stuck, left feels like it's working. The pony mag has some sort of issue, since they had an external coil wired up. The throttle control lever is stuck somewhere along the line or we would have tried to pull-start.

Any ideas on how to free up the clutches?

The Laplant-Choate Blade brackets will be coming off. Anyone want a blade and brackets? The blade is not pretty and missing the center cutting edge, but mostly complete.

Thanks,
Sam

Nice find Sam

On the main clutch there is a adjustment collar you will need to loosen up, likely the clutch has swollen over time and is now thicker than it was when parked. The cover is under the gas tank on my gas 40, after you get the main free and engine runing you will likely be able to free up the stearing clutches using the brakes or chain it to a big stump.

Good Luck

Most common on those tractors the bell crank that pulls the clutch realease yokes where the steering clutch adj. is made gets rusted and froze up on the shaft. If you pull the cover that is right in front of the seat behind the levers is where they are located. Being that the lever is partialy back on its own my guess is that is where it is stuck. Also while you have the floor plates off it would be good to lube the brake shafts where the pedals attach. I also found it easier to adjust the main clutch through the bottom inspection cover just pull it up on some big timbers first. hope this helps.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
