Hello everyone.I have wanted a bull dozer since i was a little boy.Well 2 weeks ago my dream came true. Its old but beautiful. It needs a little work but being a mechanic im always up for new challenges. My d7 cat (17a12746)had a big hole in the poney motor so i removed it and ordered the electric for it.i noticed some white milky oil inside the clutch housing so i drained it.Found some metal filings in the bottom of the case. When i removed the strainer screen it has started to come away from cupped washer it mounts to.My question is this, are the metal filings normal from an ol girl like this? Also is the screen repairable?it looks like it was soldered on originally.my local dealer is no help at all for parts because of the age of the unit.Would by a new strainer if i could find one.Is there somewhere i could find more info on parts? Thanks for any help or info on my dream come true.

Hi, and welcome, that's a beautiful 17a, one of Cat's finest.
Try you local dealer again with part number in hand, that usually works with the newbie counter jocks. Part number for the screen is 4H2978. I believe the same one was used on several models so it shouldn't be to hard to come up with one new or good used. Solder repair would work fine also.

Not unusual to find some metal in the bottom of the clutch housing. Usually from the pony pinion gear having it out with the flywheel ring gear. Also tends to collect condensation over time, or rain leaks in and fouls the oil.

Where are you located?

Where/how did you acquire your 50MT starter?
Should have come correct for the 17A.
They do make a LH & RH helical drive. Just need to get the right one.

Should look like this, 11 or 12Tooth...
Same source that "Oil Slick" recently got his for his 17A.
Kind of wonder if those folks know what they are doing as they are the ones that told him he could wire a 24v solenoid with 12v and expect it to work.

Yes, they sent the wrong one, assuming you ordered the right one.
Another picture of RH helix unit.

Might be an option to purchase the correct drive and change it yourself. It's not a big deal to change. The drive runs about $90-$100 plus shipping.

I see their ad says "left angle helical conversion drive" which is not correct to begin with. Hate to refer them but they do seem to get it right some of the time. I don't know any one else that is marketing them ready to go but I do have sources for the correct parts if one wants to do their own conversion.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
